Image Credits: Which Pictures Are Generated, and Which Are Photographs

AI

Every frame that opens a page on this site, and every smaller figure inside one, is a generated image. None of them is a photograph of the scene it shows, none records a real event, and none depicts a real, identifiable person. They are made to stand in for a setting the text is about: a flight deck, a motor pool, a payroll counter, a bare room with two chairs in it.

Because they are realistic enough to be mistaken for photographs, each one is labelled where it appears, with a badge on the image and a note in the caption, and the same fact is written into the file's own metadata using the IPTC field defined for it. That marking stays with the file if it is downloaded, hotlinked or found through an image search, which is the part a badge on the page cannot do on its own.

The exceptions, which are the interesting half

A small number of genuine photographs are served on this site at the addresses they have held for years: United States military public-affairs images that belonged to the original site and were linked from elsewhere long enough to be worth keeping reachable. Those are real photographs of real aircraft, ships and people, and they carry no badge, because labelling them would assert something untrue. If an image here has no badge, that is the claim being made about it.

How they were made

The frames were produced with a commercial text-to-image model from a written description of the scene, which is the description printed beside each file below. No image on this site is a real photograph that has been altered: an image here is either wholly generated and labelled, or a genuine photograph left alone. There is no third category, and that is deliberate — a retouched photograph is the hardest kind to disclose honestly, so none is used.
