Berkeley, CA vs. USMC

I just heard this story on Fox News – again. It appears that the Berkeley City government does not like the USMC. This story just fries my ass. I cannot fathom how American citizens can shun a organization that is dedicated to their protection.

So I sent the following email to the Berkeley City Council:

United States Marines have fought to protect American citizens, since the American Revolution. The Marine Corps is the oldest of our services. United States Marines defended Washington D.C. when the British invaded during the War of 1812. They fought to rid the Mediterranean of ruthless pirates. They fought to help the French in WWI. They beat back the Japanese Imperial Army in WWII.

The United States Marine Corps has helped people all over the world and they stand ready to defend your right to vote to expel their recruiting office from your city.

Let’s talk a little about their contribution in the war in Iraq. When the Marines arrived in Anbar Province, in April of 2004, it was a terrorist haven and anarchy ruled. The Marines recommended restraint after murderous insurgents ambushed, killed, burned and mutilated four Blackwater security contractors who were escorting a small supply convoy through the streets of Fallujah. The Marine commanders were overruled and ordered to attack Fallujah in April of 2004. They did their best to clear the city but were forced to suspend their operations when people like the citizens of Berkeley believed that they were committing atrocities.

The Marines returned to Fallujah in November and cleared the city of 5,000 terrorists. Since then, every Marine unit has been working very hard to bring peace and security to the people of Anbar Province. Today, Anbar is the shining star in Iraq.

So, you don’t want the Marines in your town!!! Does that mean that if you ever need their protection, you don’t want their help? The problem with this country today is that people like you want everything supplied to them, but have no desire to take responsibility for their own welfare. Wake up. You need the United States Marines – they don’t need Berkeley.

Right on, RSL! Maybe if they hate “guvamint” so much, then withdraw ALL of it. Pull everything US “guvamint” related from Berkeley and see how they manage. Screw’m. You’re right, they want everything supplied but no responsibility for their own sweat equity. Blech.

  2. Robert A. Connolly says:

“You need the United States Marines – they don’t need Berkeley.”

None of the rest of us need Berkeley, either!

  3. mindy abraham says:

I could do without berkely, but I could not live without the Marine’s protection.

  4. It is incidents like this that make me embarrassed to say I live in California. Do the people in Berkeley understand there is no draft…that young men in this country feel an honor, a responsibility, a willing sacrifice to serve their country voluntarily? I did.

Maybe these people should realise that the very right they are given due to the sacrifices of our Armed Forces allows the same right for a young man or woman to go into a recruiting office and voluntarily sign up to serve their country without having to cross a picket line.

If you live on a fault line and are no stranger to State and Federal assistance, and will no doubt need it again, it would be hard to imagine having Berkeley citizens feel as they do about our Marines…it is even more insane to know their Mayor feels the same way.

  5. Scott says:

    Bravo.

  6. Old Tanker says:

    Roger that Mr. Lowery…Lima Charlie….

  7. BRAVO ZULU Mr. Lowry!

If it comes down to it…and I almost hope it will just for the joy of watching Berkley wimp out and back down, my money’s on the Marines!

  8. Desert Sailor says:

    Well said Richard!!

    Defund Berkley NOW!

  9. lela says:

    A big AMEN!

  10. darwin d scott says:

lets kick there butts on this one. the usmc deserve better. on one should disrespect the military that fight for there sorry butts

  11. Josh Kim says:

Actually, the USMC is not the oldest of our services. We Marines take our heritage back to the Continental Marines who were founded on November 10, 1775. The Continental Navy and the Army were founded several months before then.

  12. Jason Hooker says:

I am a current member of the US Coast Guard, though I respect and see the need of every service in the Armed Forces of the US I respect the USMC the most. I have already had two friends seriously wounded in the middle east and hearing the oppinions of the residents of Berkely,CA disgusts me. I am a Chritian young man, but it sounds as though you need to be humbled to the point you need this annorable service. The fact of the matter is that you have already needed them, but your liberal mind does not see it that way. You believe they should not be there until it is convienent for you! You should be absolutely ashamed of yourselves for trying to abolish a service that is sworn to protect you and this wonderful world in which you reside.

  13. James Coleson, USAF, Ret says:

I sent an e-mail to their shitty council – blasting them. I sent an e-mail to support congresses efforts to take away their federal monies. Berkeley and its “council” are a bunch of fascists. They are traitors. They are worthless. They are scum. Let’s tell it like it really is. They need a big lesson. Take away all fed monies that support them and let’s see how they react to that – no police, firemen, hospitals, etc, etc. They need that lesson.

  14. Frank Navratil says:

Agree with all that is said about Berkeley.

    Who needs them.

Personally I think that all state funding should be taken away fron that city also and used for other cities.

Alot of people forget that the Marines were called out to assist in restoring order in California, more than once, during civil unrest.

  15. Alfa Romeo 15 says:

Good work Mr. Lowry, but they (Berkeley) won’t, and most of all; don’t, comprehend these forces that GAVE them that right, and will PROTECT that right to say what they want.

What is needed? A foreign power in Berkeley before they say, “Hey where is our military?”

But rest assured if we are ever invaded, it won’t be because of Berkeley.

God bless our troops wherever they may go.

  16. K.C. USAF Retired says:

Well said one and all!! As for the city “council”, and I use that term losely, their very comments represents what kind of people they are. Consider the lady that said she had a “Dr” say that her kids were crazy, so they could get out of vietnam, the man, can not say gentleman, that said he was a marine….truly he is not, was not, and never will be a marine, and the comments of the Mayor…what a gutless coward. We need to take this to what ever level is required so that other “idiots” do not echo these ambitions.
