Is Al-Qaeda Throwing in the Towel?
By John
Al Qaeda in Iraq and its presumed leader, Abu Musab Zarqawi, have conceded strategic defeat and are on their way out of the country, a top U.S. military official contended yesterday. The group's failure to disrupt national elections and a constitutional referendum last year "was a tactical admission by Zarqawi that their strategy had failed," said Lt. Gen. John R. Vines, who commands the XVIII Airborne Corps.
"They no longer view Iraq as fertile ground to establish a caliphate and as a place to conduct international terrorism," he said in an address at the Washington Institute for Near East Policy.
So says the Airborne, so say we all. This is fantastic news if it's true, but I wouldn't unfurl any Mission Accomplished banners just yet. Zarkman and the boys are a large part of the insurgency, but not the only part of the insurgency. There's still a sizable former Sunni-Ba'athist contingent that needs to tickets on the midnight train to Allah, and let's keep in mind that the mooj fought for almost a decade in Soviet Afghanistan.
True or not, I want to know why the Washington Times always has to be the bearer of good news. Wouldn't kill the rest of the print journalism gang to print the occasional "we're winning" piece.
Hat Tip Wizbangers, good catch Kim.

» Zarqawi and al Qaeda Conceding Defeat in Iraq? from Outside The Beltway | OTB
Given the daily reports of terrorism in Iraq and the resultant sense among a majority of Americans that we are losing in Iraq, could it possibly be that Abu Musab Zarqawi and his Al Qaeda in Iraq are conceding defeat? It hardly seems possible.
Yet, th... [Read More]

Be much nicer if we could unfold the aforementioned "mission accomplished" banner over Zarkman's dead smokin corpse. Then I'd start to believe such pronouncements.
This story and your earlier post about the attacks in Pakistan seem to go well together.
There's only one REAL solution for Zarkman. Otherwise it's just booting the tin can down the road. I'd rather he stayed in one place so we have a chance of catching him than scooting off to the Horn of Africa or somewhere to cause more trouble and have to chase him all over again. But that's just me.
If they're throwin' in the towel over there, that probably means they're headed this way with their attacks.
As far as the MSM goes, if OBL turned himself in tomorrow, you'd find it referenced in the 24th paragraph of a story on page B16 below the fold in the NYT.
I've got one word for you, Taqiyya.
Yeah i reckon hes not too far wrong on this, AQ have been suffering in Iraq 100 times more then what we have (coalition forces). Can't be the most popular group out there can they after the way thier grand stratagy of killing killing and more killing went badly wrong and backfired against them. But of course MSN will not touch this story because its not what they want us to hear.
I think you're wrong - all of you. Especially anyone who calls them cowards. Underestimate them and we might loose, and we might get killed.
Z is a Sunni, and he sees the Shiite winning in Iraq. Iran is also Shiite. It is NOT a hiding place (in an aboveboard sense, at least) for Sunni warriors. Iran offerred to serve us up some Al-Queda in trade for some MEK, but bush turned them down. Now we know why, MEK is OUR terrorists to use against Iran. We'll probably give terrorists GPS homing devices and laser lightups. How wonderful. How honorable.
Z is moving on to a place where the outcome is still opn, or where he can hit the near or far target. That's not as available in Iraq.
To those of us conservative weenies who have been watching the MSM with patient, objective gaze, the answer to the reason that the liberal print media (i.e. WaPo, Ny Times, LA Times, etc) never talks up the good news such as this concerning al Qaeda in Iraq is because it doesn't fit their template. The Liberal template, which is still in place even from as far back as the Viet Nam Era, is that if there is bad news, put it above the fold on A-1 as loudly and as often as you can. Say it loudly enough and often enough and they will achieve their objective of undermining the efforts of the conservative elements to make the world a safer place to live in. If the news is good, bury it so that it never sees the light of day. Anti-government, anti-freedom, anti-American sentiment (aka liberal theology) cannot stand it when their conservative oponents achieve their goals.
Those of us who have followed the military all these years will know that we did not lose the Viet Nam War. As a matter of fact, the Tet Offensive was a tactical failure on the ground on the part of the North Vietnamese Army because to our 5,000 dead, we gave out 50,000 Go-To-Hell tickets to the North Vietnamese and Viet Cong. What did us in was the war for the hearts and minds of America back home. Because there was no alternate press back then, all we had was the Big 3, and Walter Cronkite was leading the charge and igniting the fuse that finally turned public opinion against what we were trying to do in SE Asia.
I cannot remember the name of the N. Viet general who said this but he has told us that he knew he was getting his ass handed to him on a platter but he knew that if he were to hang on until the war in America was won, he would eventually have his victory. And he eventually got it (cut to the picture of the last helicopter out of Saigon).
The MSM is doing the same bidding of the loonies from the Left now as they did back then. The only difference now is the quality of the air, sea and ground forces we are putting out there and the fact that we have talk radio, the Internet and Fox News to show the ineptitude of the MSM and the lies they are trying to perpetrate on us.
The real war that needs to be won is not over there. We are getting the job done quite nicely, and without the 10,000 casualties that were forecasted. No, the war that needs to be won is here in the media, most particularly in forums such as this. And those of us who post here are most likely preaching to the choir. The real work that needs doing is to get out in the public square and take the opportunities to show that what we are doing is the right thing -- and WHY it is the right thing to do.
I have my answer to why WaPo and others like it can't print good news and I am content to watch them twist in the wind as they hoist themselves on their own petard. They are captives to their own ideology and cannot see that if the public won't buy their product, it is for a very good reason: we don't agree and won't support their ideology by buying that paper.
They don't call the Atlanta paper the Atlanta Urinal and Constipation for nothing. That rag isn't even worthy of wrapping fish.
Dave - I believe you are thinking of General Vo Nguyen Giap.

I believe this is true and most al queda cowards will head to Iran for sanctuary, with the occasional trip into Iraq for the nessecary "Killing of the Infidels" effort.
However if Bush decides its time to derail Irans intentions they will be caught between Iraq and a hard place.
