Military to Ban Twitter, Facebook

By John

Excellent timing as we get our own twitter feed off the ground. My buddy Noah Shachtman's got the scoop. The short skinny is that the Air Force dominated USSTRATCOM feels like maintaining computer security with social networking sites is just too much of a pain in the ass. Funny, the DoD has banned these sites for years -- so I'm not quite sure where this enlightened, bolt-from-the-blue "twitter es teh sux!!!" came from...

I'm not downplaying the need for effective cyber defense. That shit's a no-brainer. But, seeing that these sites are here to stay, why not work (harder) to insulate the military from the threats opened by the Facebook, Myspace, Twitter crowd instead of tossing flailed arms skyward and offering up a profound "to hell with it"???

Isn't this special? After dozens of unit Facebook pages and Twitter accounts have been created.

Have to send these guys out to locate a case of ID 10-T.

ID 10-T, if I remember right one must consult the PRKY-7 in order to get one of those.

I have mixed views on this one as I do not use twitter, facebook or myspace, for that matter I had the texting capabilities of my cell phone disabled. These sites not only represent a security hole in general, in addition we're talking about 18-19 year old soldiers, sailors, airmen and Marines who come from the biggest demographic of "file-sharing", which is another gigantic security hole, nothing is "free". I do not see the need to access these sites, if I did see a need, I would use one of them. Who cares about a message in 150 characters or less. What can you really say, in plain English, in 150 characters. When I worked with tech-support at a company, I simply deleted chat/text language emails "r u going 2"....delete. If these sites are to be allowed they should definitely be only on computers that are isolated from important networks, definitely not on any computer used for work. If you have time to check Facebook on duty then I'm certain that the first shirt can find something better for you to do.

p.s. Before speculating on age by the fact that I don't use these items, I'm only 31

Chris,

You are correct that in many cases a "first shirt" could find other uses for that FB users time, it doesn't mean he was wasting his. Yes, there is lots of nonsense out on Twitter and Facebook (I don't use MySpace), but there are also good things. It's curious that as someone who reads blogs (I presume you do since you are here) you would denigrate the other forms of social media. But no matter, I just want to point out that concerns that social media is a timewaster is not the reason for the ban. It has to do with Twitter accounts being hacked and used to spread worms, etc. It's a growing pain we went through with email and hopefully they will be able to solve these problems as well.

Also, maybe you are just not old enough at 31 to appreciate SM. LOL It's not 18 and 19 year olds. 49% of Twitter users are 35 & older. http://www.socialmediatoday.com/SMC/101661
I am 48 and Chuck (1st commenter) is over 18 to say the least.

I blame Noonan....he shows up on twitter....
