By Bull Nav

The mighty USS PORTER (DDG78) gets some.

071028-N-0000X-185 INDIAN OCEAN (Oct. 28, 2007) - A pirate skiff burns after being hit by several rounds from a 25mm gun aboard guided-missile destroyer USS Porter (DDG 78). The skiff belonged to a group of pirates that had taken a cargo ship. U.S. Navy photo (RELEASED)

A fine COMDESRON 2 ship.

I am looking forward to hearing more about this.

ME TOO. You beat me to the post... But that is a fine sight to see!

Interesting - a 25mm gun they say?

So, where are they mounting the Bushmaster on an Arlie Burke class Destroyer? Last I'd heard the Phalanx was a 20mm system.

I thought the Phalanx was a defensive system Jeff?

It is... but it seems likely that to test it you'd have to have some sort of way to manually control it. Doing the Wikipedia thing, I see that the later flights (Flight IIA at least) of the Arleigh Burke class have a very nice suite of weaponry including the Phalanx and two 25mm cannons (I assume Bushmaster type, but the Navy may have re-invented the wheel).

Also according to Wikipedia the Zumwalt class will have 57mm guns as their CIWS...

The Navy does use the Bushmaster 25mm chain gun. I saw one on a Navy ship here in Portland some years ago (docked in the Williamette River downtown for the Rose Festival). It was mounted at the railing, manually aimed and, according to the sailor I asked about it, intended to be used against attacking small boats. He said that the Navy had adopted it in response to their experience fighting the Iranians in the Persian Gulf in the late '80s.

John, CIWS Block 1B does have a surface mode for small boat threats, but I don't know if the Mighty PORTER had that upgrade installed.

The DDG's all have Bushmaster 25mm guns in addition to CIWS.

you can put those things anywhere the skipper wants them. the foundation is about 30" in diameter and needs to be about 2" off of the deck to clear the mounting bolts. they have to have 480v ac to run.

we installed 8 of them on the new jersey the after noon befor they left on thier long hawaiian cruise and they head them running by midnight.

The Close-In Weapon System (Phalanx) is a 20mm, 6-barrel, Gatling-style cannon whose purpose is the defensive destruction of incoming missiles/rockets. While it can certainly be manually targeted, an Arliegh Burke class ship has a broad selection of better offensive tools.

Excellent pic, and the sure finish of every boat that begs for the crosshairs of the U.S. Navy in open water.
