Picture of the Day: Turn and Burn
By John
They're almost worth the price tag in looks, ain't they?
The F-22 Raptor performs for thousands during an April 1 air show at Naval Base Ventura County in Point Mugu, Calif. This F-22 is based at Langley Air Force Base, Va. The F-22 is the Air Force's newest fighter aircraft. The sophisticated F-22 aerodesign, advanced flight controls, thrust vectoring, and high thrust-to-weight ratio provide the capability to outmaneuver all current and projected aircraft. Shachtman's got more photos of the cloudy looking stuff around the airframe over at his place, plus...an explanation!

Ah yes, a grand hurrah for the diplomatic ambassador of this cultured european education we hear so much about.
65th on the illiterate list? That's a good thing isn't it?? 1st in illiteracy would be bad...
And we spend roughly 4.06% of our GDP on defense, not 10%. Per capita, that ranks 30th worldwide.
Europeans, you guys are great man. Drag us into two of our higher casualty wars after centuries upon centuries of bloody conflict, force us to spend billions over 50 years to keep the peace on your continent, and then criticize us for being warlike.
I mean seriously...you guys, lol. You're so funny when you get all angry at the US for your problems.
moahah , funny guy where did you get yor education kindergarten?
you have less then 10 % of the glabal population , yes spend 25 % of all energy , the biggest polluters there are.
Your defense budget is as big as the next 9 in total on the Top 10 list .
While New orleans was sinking and they didn't give a f****.

Not one time since 1945 there has been a president of the USA without fighting a war or having a military conflict in any country they wish.
I am not angry at the states for our problems.
Your country has them , you people are just to ignorant uncivilised to notice.
that takes generations.
America is just a baby on the playground,
bad breeding. bad education bad friends.
big fist; brains of a new born.
Stepping out of somalia after one chopper down , staying in iraq for no reasons at the cot of more lives then the whole WTC centre.
Pretty heroïc.
About you time you guys stopped crossing the lines of UN rights, you Yanks invented the UN remember?
You know darn well the education system in the States is horrible for mr average guy.
We did not drag you into WW2 , you guys just woke up after the yaps kicked yr butt on pearl harbour, no yank in europe till 1944.

so that makes the american losses futile right?
The land of freedom. sure for who?, the guys in Abu ghraib , guantanamo bay how about some justice?

Try to enter the States as an European , the embedded buttplug is almost missing.
67 percent believes in God and Satan...
Godd bles America why ?,do they need it do they deserve it is it something exclusive for the americans only?
keep your DollarGod, stay on your own turf please. it could be dangerous out there and americans have the tendency to be scared and therefore triggerhappy.
your country is so free dat typing this comment is sufficiënt to get into trouble at customs. what a freedom, what a secure feeling right? makes me sligtly remind me of some other country way back in the mid 40 '..
I take pride in being half-Dutch. As I've always said, "if you ain't Dutch... you ain't much."
However, Hemaworstje, let's get our facts straight. I won't argue that America's lower education system is not that great. However, our university system is the GREATEST in the world. Tell me, Hema, where do your best and brightest attend school... where do the nations of the world send their very best to become doctors? America, baby.
Hema, the Soviets did bear a great deal of the German might on their eastern front. History's most epic combined-arms fight (Kursk) and probably all-around most vicious capaign (Stalingrad) occured on Russian soil. However, I'd like to correct you on your dates. Americans first stepped on European soil in 1943, not 1944. Although Operation OVERLORD is hard to forget (being the largest amphibious operation ever conducted... funny... not a Marine for thousands of miles... ahem!!) we invaded Sicily and the mainland of Italy in 1943.
As far as getting our asses kicked by the Japs (you gave yourself as being a Dutchman away when you said "Yap"), let's seriously get our facts straight. Yeah, we lost Pearl Harbor, but dude... we FLATTENED Japan. I mean, we burned that place to the ground. And not one, but TWO A-Bombs... yeah... I think we've pretty much ended this conversation.
And, for the record, my Tante Marijke was (and still is) VERY grateful for the American and British soldiers that liberated her, her mother, and sisters from their Japanese camp in 1945. They had been taken captive in 1941, when the Japanese invaded the Dutch East Indies.
As for our country, the Netherlands, it was never fully-liberated. What parts of it were liberated was done by the American 82d and 101st Airborne Divisions. The British 1st Airborne tried (and tried DAMN hard) to get their part done, but the general incompetence of senior officer leadership in Montgomery's staff doomed them to fight one of their most epic battles against Herr General Student's crack Panzer troepen.
Go to the American cemetery at Maastricht. Or the British one in Oosterbeek. Seeing them in the wintertime, with snow covering their silent graves, is a testimony to the dedication of American and British forces to fight the Nazis. I visit everytime I go to see my relatives in Holland.
Yeah, we consume a lot of energy... but let's get our facts straight on the pollution. China and India are ahead of us, brother.
And let's not forget that America feeds the world. We are the single largest exporter of grain (and those who are behind us are WAY behind us). We grow so much damn food, we have to GIVE it away. My mother (Lijntje) was old enough to remember the Marshall Plan and bags of AMERICAN food that fed the Dutch people (and people of ALL of Europe) after World War Two.
And Hema, if we want to take a look at Bosnia, I can point out TREMENDOUS policy failures, especially one very gross incident that made me shudder to be half-Dutch. You know what town I'm talking about and the pathetic performance there by the Dutch Army. To me, that was the THIRD time America had to send its armed forces to solve a European problem. The place was Srebinica, and Dutch soldiers sat and watched while Serbs entered their "safe haven" and snatched thousands of Muslims and executed them... all while the Dutch soldiers wrung their hands and the officer in charge wondered what to do.
As far as immigration goes, let's not ignore Holland's problem with turks... the Moroccans and leftovers from the Middle East who live in the seedy districts of Amsterdam, Rotterdam, and Utrecht and have caused a rapid increase in crime. I know this because my cousin, C. (I won't give his real name here), is a Rotterdam cop. He talkes endlessly about the Dutch immigration problem. Two of Europe's most recent major political assasinations have occured on Dutch soil... both at the hands of immigrants.
America has its problems, dude. I'm one of the first to admit them. And, because I've seen a good part of the world, I realize them.
But every country has its problems. Holland does too.
But, I love both my countries very much... I'll brag on their strong points (Holland is Europe's bank... and dude, Dutch women are hot... and Amsterdam has the sex museum and legalized marijuana). I'll also be the first to defend either of them, whether online, in a pub or a battlefield.
In addition, we pretty much financed and supplied both the British and Russian war machines since the start of the war with lend-lease etc. While we were trying to convince our supposedly "warmongering" citizens to help our european friends, the Brits were addicted to shipments of American steel, and the devastated Soviet lines were fleshed out with Shermans, M-3's, and Airacobras.
And I seem to remember it was the 8th AF that cut the Nazi armies off at their source; stopping the meat grinder by being the first to gain air superiority and effectively smash their factories.
you guys have more patience than I do...there's so much crap this guy assumes to be fact that's just...well, wrong....I didn't know where to begin.
So I went and drank some beer instead.
John, I did the samething!lol Personaly I wish we would just pull off the world stage, leave Europe and Asia and defend our moat (Atlantic and Pacific) and sit back and let the world go to hell. The Euroweenies would be begging us to save their sorry asses in a year!
or not. Sorry guys but americans are not indispensables. Neither euros or asians. But anyway, what about speaking on the F22?
Actually, the new F-35 Lightning II "JSF" Joint Strike Fighter is the newest, top-gear plane of the moment. The Raptor costing way too much, Lockheed Martin came up with the F-35. But I bet most of you fighter plane experts know that already! Just precising.
God, it's so amusing and ironic when a rude, ignorant European bumbles into a forum and accuses Americans of being rude and ignorant. And then gets politely yet thoroughly devastated in a debate by an American who is clearly much more informed.
The most amusing thing to me is that I've seen it time and time again, more times than I can count, and it's still surprising and amusing to me.
But I can't help but say a few things in response to the euro-buffoon's comments.
First, as to literacy, I have been in a few countries that claim to have higher literacy rates than the US. Within less than 24 hours I was convinced they were either lying or using some very odd criterion: far fewer libraries and bookstores than we have in the US, and far fewer books in private residences.
As to this laughable claim about the US being a young country: the US is one of the oldest governments in the world. All the silly European countries are just little babies. And then there's the EU, which will never live up to it's hype. Nice to see you guys have a unified single currency. We've had that for a while. Welcome to the 18th century, Europe.
It's quite interesting to also read a European lecture the US on matters of war. Laughable, even. It's fascinating that the most peaceful and prosperous period in European history was achieved only after the United States build military bases on the continent.
On matters of education.. Oh, lets just look at the number of nobel prize winners coming out of American universities, the number of discovers, the number of patents. Some US universities have more supercomputing power than entire countries in the EU.
oh ya? and bush is satan.
US indeed did much for europe in the first and the second world war... without them in the 1st war Antant would have loose the war in the second the french and british would have bin shooting practice on the landing beaches at Normandy without the Us rangers New Zeelanders and Australians... and for the Russians in the second world war they may have been a stronge force look at them now they are rubish...US fights for peace...!!! And yes Europeans go Criticisez youre own plane for instance your most "technologikley adnvaced fighter in the world" The Eurofighter Typhoon...
Do not say that the F-22 is the worlds best aircraft. Go to youtube.com and type in Russian SU-37 Flanker. You will see thrust vectoring on steroids.
The Dutchman who has his head up his hindquarter and locked is entitled to his opinions. I want to tell you that if you have a serious medical problem, your first choice would be...the USA. And you may be treated by a foreign born physician. The operating system you used to post your drivel originated not in Europe but in Seattle or Cupertino. I've been to 83 countries around the world and I have found that most countries have reason to be proud including your great country, the Netherlands. But lets be clear about one thing...you would be speaking German if the United States did not spill a lot of blood on European soil. Visit the US cemetery in Normandy if you have doubts. We're not perfect, we have an idiot from Texas as President, but we have a free, democratic society which gives hope to not only we Americans but many from around the world.
ummm....ya i like planes......THEY GO FAST
There's more to a fighter than thrust vectoring. Reliability is another of many criteria. F15's are only now (1972) starting to show signs of aging. Ability to maintain your fleet is also another. SU37 is export only. Kinda like a PC v. Mac. Mac works because mac makes mac and maintains it. PC is export only; fuckit its out the door.
yeah, well, the reason we puttin up that fence o nthe border is cause so many stinkin illegals are comin through and ruinin us by breakin all the laws. and you guys over in your precious europe would be under hitler still if it weren't for the American GI
"to dumb to notice"
"you have less then 10 %"
And this is my favorite one .....
"you people are just to ignorant"
Now ..... this is a supposed "intellectual" spewing crap here, but he can't seem to spell and his grammar is atrocious!
I thought the comments were supposed to be about the F22 Raptor. Not some sort of international pissing contest.
Why are you so offended by some retard with nothing better to do than start a debate on a subject from half a century in the past. The poor fucker must have such a pathetic hollow life if he cant find any more recent events. Not to mention the US & UK should be seen as partners not enemies.
DEVIDE AND RULE, the States, Europe, Russia, the Middle East, the World.
Go cry-babies, go! Still don't got the picture?
Cheers, Dubyadubya2.

you guys are so retarded o and america can u stop bombing us???!!!!!
btw su37 is a pos the f22 is far superior. but in the here and now the future is not in either of them, or the jsf its in the reaper.the new version of the predator. for those of you that are lost the predator is a uav that takes some nice pictures, the reaper is a uav that takes nice pictures of everyone running from the bombs it just dropped. the sr 71 was also a plane built b4 its time and because it was such a threat it got retired. but even more look at a b52h the stratofortress. able to sent nuclear payloads across half the globe. why shoot down a few planes when you can just glass the continent that they are comming from?
If you judge a plane based on thrust vectoring, yes the su37 flanker is incredible. But in order to judge a plane you need to look at the whole picture. Thrust vectoring, stealth, speed, combat readiness, mission rate, cruise speed, communications, first look first kill capability, ability to maintain energy in combat, ability to take damage, and lots of other things my small mind can not even fathom. The F15 and f16 could hold their own in combat with the Flanker in that it would come down to pilot skill and training. The F22 is always classed against 5 or 6 F15's (which have 105 to 0 kill to loss ratio in actual combat by the way) so that the F15 pilots have a chance. They are not worse pilots than the F22 drivers, in fact the F22 pilots come from the same stock. It is simply they are severely outclassed. If a flanker pilot wanted to compete in an airshow against an f22 pilot for best of show, no doubt he/she would win, but in actual combat where the total aircraft / support structure comes into play the SU 37 Flankers pilots best and probably most used system would be his/her ejection seat. Another problem is cost. If you can only build 5 SU 37's even if they are 10 times better the war would still be lost. Look at the German Panzer tanks which were 5 to 10 times better than our Shermans. But we had 50 Shermans against each Panzer. Quality has a lot of play in war up to a point. If you have 300 planes vs 10 it comes down to the 10 superior plane flat out not having enough missiles/bullets to even put a dent in the superior force.
Sorry I can't bash anyone here, I personally think every country in the world has its good points and its bad, seems a waste to point out problems unless you have a viable solution to them.
That being said feel free to rip/add to or from my argument as you feel fit, please just try to use fact. I would love any plane at an airshow by the way, so don't think I am ripping on the SU37 as it is surely an incredible bird.
