The Simpons Trash the Army
By John
The Simpons have really been swinging the ideological hammer this season. Latest offense is an anti-Army smack fest.
Personally, I thought the episode was pretty funny....but then again I don't really offend all that easily. If the creators were trying to make a political statement, there's really nothing to sweat here. If you switched the comedy lens with a factual one, none of their points about the service and the Iraq war really hold up. It reminds me of an old Reagan quote: It's not that liberals are ignorant, it's just that they know so much that isn't so.
Besides, the anti-war movement can take the Simpsons, conservatives will always have South Park.

I don't get offended very easy, I am usually the one doing the offending. I thought that 99% of the 'jokes' fell flat, they just were not funny. Maybe the truth got in the way of my enjoyment. I did appreciate the reference to the old Warner Bros cartoons.
I have been a die hard Simpson's fan for years. So much so that I find it entertaining to pass the time by seeing who can come up with the most quotes from random episodes. That being established, the Simpson's jumped the shark years ago. I have moved on, I still watch for that 1 good joke. It hurts when the episode doesn't even provide a chuckle, but don't hold it against the brand. It's hard to remain fresh, hilarious and ideologically neutral for 19 seasons.
On a side note, South Park has yet to jump the shark. Let's hope they never do.
I just got out of BCT and was looking forward to some laughs. I was disappointed that they spent about 60 seconds making fun of BCT and the rest knocking the Army's competance.
It didn't bother me. I have a thick skin too. It just wasn't very funny.
I think they could have gotten a lot more humor out of BCT. I know I found some parts very funny.
Aloha.
Worst. Episode. Ever.
This reminded me of an episode where Homer is recruited by the Navy to help run one of its nuclear subs. Playing Devil's advocate here, but the Simpson's has always made episodes based on current events and one sooner or later they were going to do one about Iraq. Another interesting thing about this episode is that it coincides with Kerry's infamous "If you don't study you get stuck in Iraq" remark. Besides, when has the Simpson been in line with the government?
They used to have both "progressive" and conservative writers, so it was OK.
For example, one joke where Kent Brockman announced "The government teaches young people to kill... they call it the Army... but a more alarmist name would be 'The Killbot Factory'".
I thought that was genuinely funny. Stuff like that allowed me to ignore the occasional anti-gun joke etc. and possibly even laugh at it, because it was a good joke, even though I don't think it's necessarily true.
It just hasn't been funny for the last few years. They "try too hard" and no longer seem to make fun of "progressives" or the media - just conservatives. I think I'll buy Season 8 DVDs, and maybe 9 (to add to my collection of 1-7) and that will be it. The Simpsons went seriously downhill during Season 9 and most episodes after that aren't very funny any more. This is just the last straw.
Look, ya can't take yourself too damn seriously. I had a laugh out of it... not the funniest Simpsons I've ever seen, but it was worth a chuckle or to.
I loved the guy tapping the recruits on the head with his swagger stick... "Front line infantry. Front line infantry. Front line infantry."
Hilarious.
It was a good laugh, but at the end they made the same mistake every comedian make when trying to be "talk seriously".DON'T.
Marge explained, with all the letters "that´s what happens when a population resists to an invading army" or something.
I KNOW. I´m not stupid. Doesn't matter if I agree or not, I don´t want the moral delivered in a tray, complete with reading instructions.
I just want to address this first response about conservatives only having south park. 3 out of every 4 conservatives I meet think that south park is awwsul. They see it as the work of the devil. I also hate the fact that American's are against Americans in a time of war. One side of America says this while the other says that. I don't care how you spin that the fact will remain that we are not united in a time of war.
DISGUSTING!!!!!!!!!!! I`am sure the writers of this no talent crap have done there "part".No on second thought they have done there part FOR the terrorists! All those brave men and women who have shed there blood because this nation, the whole nation, ask them to fight a war in a god forsaken land really appericate this type of "humor"How You people can look your selves in the mirror is besides me.You have no honor or love for this country. One word ,SHAME.Shame on your wrothless names!!!
Joel:
I liked that joke too, when I saw it in Full Metal Jacket.
Geez Murph, lighten up. I've done three deployments and just got back from my last one a few weeks ago.
The country is not united simply because the administration has done an awful job of mobilizing it for war. They only equate the fight to WW2 whenever they need a bill passed in Congress. However, it's business as usual for 99% of the American population while 1% actually carry the burden of the fight.
And, anyone who draws life lessons or lessons on foreign policy from a Simpsons episode needs to re-examine their motivations for watching cartoons. I simply watch for a little comic relief. Once in awhile, it's going to be offensive... even to me.
The Simpsons have been better the past couple of years after a couple of awfull seasons. But, I found this episode lame. I wasn't really offended, but most of the jokes weren't funny. There were a few good laughs, but they tried too hard to put out a political message instead of just doing some satire. I don't care as much about the politics, but I just hope that this isn't another downward swing for the show.
Gawd, Murph! Take a pill or something! You know, some people in this country are at least as lacking in a sense of humor as the radical islamofacist nutballs who are the enemies of peace and freedom. Think about it.
Simpsons vs Walker Texas Ranger
Now I was offended by the Simpsons last episode, but it was the "Simpsons" so i just laughed it off. What really bothered me is the way all the bad guys in walker texas ranger seem to have a military back ground. No one good has a former military record, only American Indians(I am one) and texans( i lived there) can aid walker in his drive for justice. but when he needs a killer, or a foe that may best him in a fight... Then here comes the disgruntled former military man. or militia type.
Seeing that Chuck Norris is a former Airman. I find it reprehensible.
Now you know why when you go to a Liberals house to date thier daughter or to sell them AmWAy they act like your gonna, go "War Wagon" on them, its because of episodes of the simpsons and walker texas ranger has made us look like wacko's.
Well, again, I wouldn't associate with anyone who gets their worldview from Simpsons and Walker: Texas Ranger.
Although they say that Chuck Norris has two speeds... walk and kill.

That it coincided with Veteran's Day was particularly nice...
