Post Update: Chief Gebhardt & Iraqi Baby Girl
By John
An emailer from 332nd Air Expeditionary Wing sent in an additional photo of Chief Gebhardt and the Iraqi child that he has taken under his care. Heartwarming stuff. Dont let anyone tell you that we're not making a difference over there.
The baby girl was orphaned after terrorists killed family. Terrorists wanted to finish the job, so they shot the poor girl in her head. Fortunately a coalition medical unit was able to save her.
That's the war we're fighting in a nutshell. The enemy seeks to destroy innocent life, we protect and preserve it.

As a father of a 9-month-old baby girl, this positively rips me up inside.
What is going to happen to this poor baby? Born a girl in a nation that mostly practices a religion that looks at women as second-class citizens. A religion that broken in half, and the two factions hate each other so much that they would murder this infant's entire family, and try to kill her too.
Heartbreaking.
Chief told me through an email that the baby was transferred to an Iraqi facility around the same time he went home. The trauma center where she was being treated isn't set up for the long-term care she will require. He also said that she was not the first nor the last to have captured the hearts of our military men and women and that he was just the one that was in the picture...it could have been anyone there.
Thank you, each and every one of you, for your service to this wonderful country and the sacrifices that you all make.
This a great story and a true example of the tender side of our tough servicemen and the many emotions they experience while away from home and doing service for our country.
I would only like to ask as well as add why no mention of all the Doctors and Nurses,(male and female) that attended to this unfortunate Iraqi child.
I know first hand the part they had in her survival and care since she is one of many of my Son's (Capt. Jason Crosby, USAF) patients there at Balad base hospital and he is the one who snapped this now highly circulated photo of Chief Gephardt.
As a parent of one of thousands of servicemen and servicewomen still in Iraq, it would be appreciated if some mention of them and their hardwork when opportunities such as Chief Gephardt's story comes along.
