An Email from Iraq

By John

Found this in my inbox earlier.

Thought you would appreciate...

Got a tough but heartwarming story and a picture of a medical Chief, John Gebhardt in Iraq. This little girl’s entire family was executed…they intended to execute her also and shot her in the head…but they failed to kill her. She was cared for by John’s hospital and healing up, but has been crying and moaning. The nurses said John is the only one she seems to calm down with, so John has spent the last four nights holding her while they both sleep in that chair. The girl is coming along with her healing.

Google searched for more info, didn't find much, but Mike at the excellent Cold Fury got the same message and simply said: "Why We Fight." Indeed.

With a wounded Iraqi child in the Chief's arms and a pistol holster on his shoulder, the photo does seem to capture our purpose in Iraq rather succinctly.

This happens every day, in different ways. Our troops care. That's what makes them the best.

This cuts through the phony political nonsense we are saturated with from our out-of-power politicians and agenda-driven media.

This reminds me why I am proud to be an American.

OOH-rah for our men and women in uniform. I am so very proud of each and every one of you. You are in my prayers. God be with you. This is a wonderful photo and brings it all home.

Gebhardt is with the 332nd AEW in Balad.

They've been telling us about getting some local children as patients recently so we've been sending appropriate supplies.

Yes, our guys do this every day and yes, they are the best.

God Bless our troops!

Thank you. The courage and caring of our men and women in uniform show why they and the USA are the best people and country in the world. God bless you all!

j swaim   ·  October 17, 2006 05:12 AM

God Bless and keep each of you. You are so dear to our hearts. Someone should submit this photo of John and "Johanna" (Yo hanna) to the Boston Globe, NY and LA Times & Washington Post and all of the other "papers" that publish NOTHING, NOTHING about our wonderful children - the men and women in the uniforms of the United States of America. Don't forget Newsweek and Time.

I'll be honest. This picture makes me angry.

It makes me angry because I know that this picture displays the truth of the American miltary while people, who have the freedom to do so because of people like this, curse them.

It makes me angry that I have to dig around on political blogs to find links to stories like these when I should be seeing them on the nightly news.

It makes me angry that, having grown up in Colorado Springs around so many fine men and women of our armed forces, that I know this to display the honor of our troops while people with microphones smear them.

I feel indignant anger towards those who refuse to spread the story to our nation because I am so proud of who our fighting men and women really are.

Bradford Taylor   ·  October 17, 2006 01:46 PM

If we are not going to secure the nation to the point of stopping this kind of activity, what are we doing there? I'm all for staying there if we are actually going to police the place. But if we are too cherry-assed to shoot looters, how are we going to control that place? Have we even hung a SINGLE person? Sheesh.

TCO   ·  October 17, 2006 04:15 PM

It's about time the world sees a little compassion in the news with stories such as this instead of the chaos and mayhem our news agencies seem to thrive on.

ESB   ·  October 18, 2006 08:56 AM

The MSM don't do stories like this. Not only is it against their political adgenda, but it's just too much trouble.

You see, they would have to verify too many things.

Is this picture real, who took it, get a statement from them.

Is the story real, who knows for sure what happened, who first rescued the little girl, where, how do we know who shot her. Did Americans have any thing to do with her getting shot?

And on and on...

So, you see, they don't have the time and don't want to expend the effort to print stories like this.

It's easier to just hire an Iraqi stringer, pay him for a story and pics and just take his word for what happened and where and why.

Understand now?

I received that photo and that story on October 13th from my brother, who is an army officer. I'm a guest-poster at C-F, but hadn't done anything new in some time - work and all that.

That photo and that story broke the ice again for me, and I posted it. Thank you for your kind words and thank you for all that you and your fellows, in each of the five services do.

As I e-mailed Mike at CF "I'm most proud of the fewest words I've posted."

Bravo Zulu, sir. Semper Paratus.

I am fully aware of the scariface you and your family have to endure. I was in your situation during Viet Nam. I for one am very proud of you.
All the troops and the President Bush have my full support and heartfelt thanks.

When the media gets hold of the image they will claim that it depicts medical Chief, John Gebhardt carelessly crushing an Iraqi child's foot between his knees.

You know - one soldier cares for an orphan kid, one rapes a 14 YO girl and kills her family. There are two sides to the military. The sooner we don't need them the better (for ALL of us!). For all there wonderful intentions, the vividly demonstrate all that is irksome about humanity.

This is what the Christmas spirit is all about and yes I did say CHRISTMAS SPIRIT. May the Lord keep Chief Gebhardt and all of other men and women who are proudly serving our country safe and may they be home in thime for Christmas next year.

Merry Christmas to All!

This is a very heartwarming and heartbreaking story, but one that shows the reason that we are there. The extremists executed her entire family, and tried to kill her too, and for what? What does executing an entire innocent family get for those Islamic extremists? That is the reason we are over there - to keep the war out of American cities, towns and streets.
We are there because we care for those innocent people, and we believe in freedom for all of us, and peace when that freedom is assurred.

Wow, I can't even explain how I feel about this, it's good but sad at the same time, but definetly heart warming. Is it possible to adopt kids from this war torn country? How can one with so little help?
