Israel Prepares for War, Again
By John
Israel has appointed a top general to oversee a war against Iran, prompting speculation that it is preparing for possible military action against Tehran's nuclear program. Maj. Gen. Elyezer Shkedy, Israel's air force chief, will be overall commander for the "Iran front," military sources told the London Sunday Telegraph.
Calling it the Iran "front" is accurate, as action against Iran would simply be a different battlefield in Israel's current war in southern Lebanon. Lebanon is to Normandy as Tehran is to Berlin, if you want the World War II/SAT comparison to engaging the same enemy on different fields of battle.
Such is the tragic reality of being a "one bomb state," where one nuclear bomb can negate your ability to continue as a functioning nation. Law of the jungle applies in the Middle East, kill or be killed.
The Israelis are being understandably tight lipped on their plans. But their appointment of an Air Force commander indicates that airpower will be a primary actor in any Iranian theater.
Expect 5-6 primary targets, with roughly 5 major aimpoints per targets. Iran has certain "must-hit facilities," which will be defended by Iran's newly acquired, state of the art Russian surface to air missiles and the Iranian Air Force.
One small comfort, however. Iran demonstrated during their war with Iraq that they lacked an understanding of their own technology. Their tactics, which are based on old Soviet doctrinal "mass of force" principles, are obsolete. And the one strategy that has paid off for the Iranians -asymmetric, low intensity conflict- is useless against an air assault.
Make no mistake, such a campaign will cost Israeli lives. But I have no doubt that if the IAF undertakes this dangerous mission, they will be successful.

The Israelis have a small number of German Diesel subs - - supposably they've been working on creating a second-strike nuclear capability.
Any Muslim state that wrecked Jerusalem (intentionally or not), though, would not only gain the dedicated revenge of Jews outside of the blast range, but a whole host of other Muslims.
It don't matter to me if IAF borrows a Raptor pack from us - what are allies for anyway? Maybe they'd like to rent a couple of carriers - there's a big discount for allies you know.....
Igout - the intent would only be to cripple,if not destroy, Iran's nuclear potential, like they did to saddam hussein. I don't think IDF has what it takes logistically to reach that far, but then you never know what they have up their sleeves and what they really have for missles either. The Iranians will have everything they've got guarding the sites, even flying dogs to bark when they smell Jews. We owe it to the world to give Iran a few stealthy kisses and knock out their nuke capability. Their energy contracts with China will not be interrupted, unless they want to pull the trigger and have a throwdown with the US, but then they will lose it all, and the thing most valued by the mullahs, political power and control over their people.
So Israel has at the least TWO ARAB COUNTRIES between them and Iran. A roundtrip distance of 4,000 kilometers. A small inventory of applicable strike aircraft. On the other hand, the United States has US Air Force components in Bahrain, Iraq, Afghanistan, Uzbekistan, Turkey and on US Navy carriers. Why is it the Israeli's responsibility to handle the Iranians- when President Bush stated he would not allow Teheran to go nuclear?
Lt. Fishman has an interesting point here. By the same token, the only thing that is keeping Iran from already waging direct war against Israel is the american presence in the golf. Sometimes presence is deterrence enough. However, if a real war erupts between the Islamofacist state of Iran and Eretz Israel, I don't see how the USA can stay out of it...

What will it take for Israel or the United States to take military action against Iran?
Prozac (FLUOXETINE) is a Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitor (SSRI) that helps patients with depression by increasing the availability of serotonin in the brain. Scientists believe serotonin affects many types of activity in the brain, including the regulation of mood.

I am an American and although I don't want us to be at War with another country, when it comes to Iran we have no choice. Plus if they attack Israel who we must protect at all cost, then we have no choice. I will fully support my country or the country of Israel any action to stop radical leaders like those in Iran from causing a Middle East Nuke war!

The IDF failed to destroy Hez bunkers that were right next door; what makes them think the ones far away in Iran aren't even more deeply buried?
Or maybe the plan is stab deep at the vitals of the nation itself, destroying the oil infrastructure, transportation, power, communications, dams and bridges, to put the people there back in their beloved 7th century.
Judging by the chaos in New Orleans in aftermath of Katrina, it must be quite tempting to put the society itself out of business.
You guys are military, could this be done, short of dropping nukes which would likely drive neighboring Russia and China literally ballistic?
