Good Work, Fellas (Updated)

By Maj P

**UPDATE** See below...

Bye, bye, AMZ. You *won't* be missed.

As many have pointed out already, this isn't the end. But it is one of the innumerable steps forward toward victory. The background to the operation-- which we'll never know, or won't know for many years if ever-- would reveal the true extent of the win, the intelligence coups, the dozens of smaller joint and combined operations, the painstaking planning and execution. So to those unnamed men (and women) overseas who had a hand in this victory, I say good work.

Update: the intrepid Bill Roggio tells us who did it.

Free beer for the gunners, all they can drink for a year and a nice cash bonus and a year's soft duty to boot. We just don't appreciate the troops anymore.......

First off, I agree wholeheartedly that killing this SOB should earn the pilot who released the bomb a DFC. Good kill.

Second, this is a coup not only for our overall war on terror, but IO-wise this is a chance for the Iraqi gov't to demonstrate itself as legitimate AND capable. I am hoping that this will come to fruition

Now, allow me to play devil's advocate here. I will hypothesize that this may be what his organization (or even AQ proper) wanted to happen. Let's not forget that tips on his location have reportedly come from the organization itself and that al-Zarqawi was always considered by some to be a liability at times. His attacks in Jordan damaged grassroots support there for the Iraqi insurgency. Is it not plausible that the organization intentionally fed us information in order to have him killed, facilitating the rise of a new and more effective leadership without the fallout of a power struggle? An added benefit is that his killing by us marks him as a "martyr" where he will have a psychological value to new recruits.

This will play out in the coming weeks. What you are definitely going to see is a retaliatory strike from al-Qaeda in Iraq. This is almost a given.

Either way, it's still a coup for us and Iraq. This is an occasion to celebrate, but not rest.

Tag 'em and bag 'em, boys! I got a ten spot says it was the Jordanians who ran him to ground and called in the air jockeys. The Z man was pulling in alot of support and boosting morale among Jordan's jihadis and they were hot on his trail too. It wasn't some GI with blue eyes and a midwest accent that was snoopin and poopin around that village and tagged him. But what the hell, it was a team effort and that's what counts.

I have to disagree with you the "you won't be missed part." I personally kind of enjoyed wathching the bloopers from his last propaganda video. Humor like that is rare.

I guess this means there won't be any more updates from the Zarqman on Iowahawk.
