General MacArthur ordered a war crimes trial for the Japanese Commander in Malaya,General Yamashita for the brutalities to civilians and the British POW's of the Singapore battle. The brutality equaled that of the Nazi's and MacArthur felt that Yamashita had disgraced the profession of arms with these crimes.Yamashita was eventually hung.
James Bradley documents this behaviour in his book Fly Boys.Much of the problem goes back to the 1920's when a fanatical nationalist group,The Black Dragons took virtual control of the army.I do not have to point out the behaviour of japanese troops in China, especially Nanking,as that has become quite famous.

Mule:

You are absolutely correct. The (single, fatal) snap shot I made on the running hog last year was made possible by the light short handy rifle I was carrying-- the Steyr Scout. Not only its short length (and short LOP), but also the fact that I wasn't fatigued from carrying it all afternoon. Great rifle.

Depending on the type of shooting, I am of the opinion that LOP is as important with rifles as it is with shotguns. A rifle that doesn't fit you either way is a detriment; however, I'd agree with Col. Cooper (how magnanimous of me, huh? lol) that a "too short" LOP is easier to deal with than "too long".

If you do any sort of hunting where running/moving target shots are possible, a properly fitting rifle is very important.

The Kamikazes may have had guts, but the Army consisted of savages that had complete disrespect for the most basic human rights.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Japanese_war_crimes

America has committed its wrongs, but for the most part our soldiers will risk life and limb to protect civilians caught in the middle of warfare. And when those wrongs are detected we attempt to prosecute those involved and prevent it from happening again, almost to a fault in my opinion. The same cannot be said for the Imperial Japanese Army or the German Nazi soldiers for that matter. I'm sorry their sense of national pride is hindered by their historical atrocities, but they have many more years of atonement due to the scale of their crimes.

The IER scope is apart of the system of the user-friendly rifle. It makes it easier to shorten the LOP in a way, because you don't have to worry about getting whacked by the scope with an LOP shorter than you're used to.

LTCOL P,

Does the scope make the difference? Over iron sights, I might not want to break stock weld if I could avoid it, and it would seem a slightly longer pull might facilitate that. Or am I off the mark with that assumption?

I have no problem with Japanese monuments to their war dead... even their kamikaze pilots. As bizarre and twisted as we may see it, to summon up the courage to penetrate an American carrier group's air defense, pretty much unarmed, and then to aim your plane at a ship and ram into it takes a lot of courage. Sinister? Yes. Crazy? Probably. But still pretty ballsy. And, regardless of their national aims, the men who served their country, fought, and died should be, at the very least commemorated by their citizenry.

What I have an issue with is how they parade around the world, feigning indignity at anything about the war other than reminders of the atomic bomb attacks and, only then, if they're portrayed as a victim.
