Hotel Tango to Rawles for reminding of this, the 19th anniversary of the bloody battle of Mogadishu.
My own tours in Somalia with 24 MEU (SOC) bookend-ed that battle, and I vividly remember being flown over the city in Army Blackhawks in early ’94 and having the pilots point out the various key sites.
At the time it was remarkable for being a small action that grew into a monstrous horrific fight. Who knew that ten years later similar actions– worse, even– would be commonplace in Fallujah and elsewhere?
(The book on the battle remains, by the way, an outstanding piece of work. It is frequently overshadowed by the movie, which ain’t half bad, but the book is worth re-reading.)
