My issue any time they start talking about downsizing the military is that they always cut from the bottom. Reduce the General staff first, then talk about reducing troop numbers. The excuse is always that the reduction in cost and personnel at the higher level is minimal in comparison, but then you end up with a ton of chiefs and no indians. I’m not saying they shouldn’t reduce the forces, but their methods tend to be skewed towards cutting the guys that have no say in policy.
Drones… they are a nice idea, but they are electronic devices. They can be hacked, they can be disabled by jamming the controller signals, and as Iran showed recently they can be hijacked. They have a history of being under-encrypted (or not even encrypted at all originally…), and they dehumanize combat. I understand the wish to protect the troops but I do not agree with this push to reduce our flying forces to a relatively easily disabled/destroyed machine. Drones in their current form will not hold up against other aircraft.
They are cutting Generals and Admirals. And GS and Full-time Equivalents (FTE, aka contractors). Contractors here got the word, and are prepping for exodus. Cool – more folks unemployed and unemployable. Glad I’m leaving DoD never to return.
Townie: you may know the answer. Has the NCA determined a grand strategy to shape our forces around? I haven’t seen anything, as yet. Nothing cohesive or cogent anyway.

Speaking of drones, did Pres Obama ever get ours back from Iran? Just wondering………

13,400 Dept of AF civilian slots cut. Just the start of Jimmy Carter 2. So glad I’m out.
