Christmas Maine-iac
By Lt Col P
Unreserved Bravo Zulus to author Stephen King for fronting the cash to send some Maine Guardsmen home for Christmas before they head out to Afghanistan:
"Julie Eugley, one of King's personal assistants, told the Bangor Daily News that the Kings were approached about giving $13,000.
"But Stephen King thought the number 13 was a bit unlucky, so the couple pitched in $12,999 instead. Eugley chipped in $1 to make for an even $13,000."
Nice touch, that.
And if I'm not mistaken, the 3-172nd Infantry is THE ONLY true mountain infantry unit left in the US Army. They'll have their work cut out for them in the 'Stan.

You are correct. 3/172nd Inf. is the only true Mountain outfit in the Army. I was a member of Co. C, then located in Plattsburgh, NY. We underwent our mountain training at Ft. Ethan Allen, Vt. Only the 3rd battalion is, or was, mountain trained. I unfortunately left Plattsburgh when I finished college, but the two years I spent in that unit were the best. For a Guard unit in the 1980s we did some very cool and intense training.
At the time the battalion consisted of companies from NY, Vt., NH. and Maine. I believe Co. has since moved to RI.
The unit was formed in 1985 and was originally slated to fight with the Italian Alpini troops if the big bad Soviets ever decided to roll west. Afghanistan is a made to order battlefield. I wish I could go.
And three cheers for Mr. King.
