Will We Support?

I appreciate the view of the General Sir David Richards the head of the British Army, but I have to wonder if the citizens of the US, UK, and the other NATO countries have the stomach for a forty year slog.

Above my pay grade, for sure, but I’d guess that “it depends” – on the details. Forty years is a long time. During the past forty years, my industry has cratered, boomed, cratered, boomed, cratered, and is now flat. The world economy, entire industry segments, international alliances, military conflicts, all that can change many times. A critical issue will be the casualty rate, of course, and the cost.

There are too many long term variables to predict whether the effort can be sustained for forty years. We can’t even predict next weeks weather accurately. That’s my take.

Damn good question. As for the Europeans, who knows? I have long thought that when a nation builds up a huge system of social welfare, the preservation of that structure becomes a pressing matter, and defense becomes a luxury. Spain has already shown that such a nation can be knocked out of the fight. There are exceptions, but that is the trend.

Will we be next? God forbid!
