“It’s like a blow-dryer in your face.”

That’s how someone once described to me the climate of Kuwait in the summer. True, so true. This is my fourth (?) time through here in various modes of transport, and I find myself recognizing more and more landmarks. And this time, a vague sense of familiarity finally coalesced: Las Vegas. It’s as hot and dry as Vegas, and every inch as tacky. Just not as much fun.

However, the camp where I am is as congenial as it can be made to be, and the Marine liaison cell is a well drilled machine. I have reasonable expectations of getting out of here and on to Afghanistan soon.

Right! I’m off now to do something. What exactly that is, I don’t know. It might involve sleep. I have a comfortable but squeaky rack, and for a VMI alumnus with nothing but time on his hands (no pun intended), a squeaky rack is a terrible thing to have.

More to follow.

    BR LtCol P,

You should read the TM on that piece of gear sometime.

It is not necessary to perform a daily function check on it.

    But I know you will

It’s funny how the U.S. and Aussie military can be close allies divided by a common language.

In the aussie army, female soldiers are sometimes referred to (in impolite company) as “racks” which I believe comes from the old WW2 grouping of all female soldiers into what was then called the Women’s Royal Australian Army Corps or WRAAC. With the passage of time the slang term has faded but isn’t entirely gone, and using it marks out an NCO as a non-PC dinosaur type (which means just about every senior NCO with our lot).

Thus your description of having a comfortable but squeeky rack waiting for you would get some stares here… :-)

    Wilbur:

Good one! Of course in the American usage, “rack” has yet another meaning, more closely related to yours… They tend not to squeak, even when containing silicon.

BTW, lots of your folk around here, mostly RAAF types. A very fit and capable looking lot, too.

Godspeed and good hunting LTC. I should expect that a little CLP applied judiciously may cure your noise problem…

  5. VFRMarine says:

Judicious application of other CLP-like substances may also cause a noise problem
