The Danger of the Instant Jihadist
By Lt Col P
MMM has a good post on the self-starting "instant jihadist" who assassinated a US Army private in Arkansas. Go, read, follow all the links.
This, as we have noted before, is the most difficult threat to counter, especially if it's one guy who, in essence, wakes up and decides today's the day. He might not have left any sort of electronic trail, or skylined himself in any way. The best defense against him is vigilance, individual and organizational. Be in Condition Yellow; have a plan and act on it.
This is unfortunately a stark illustration that the threat exists, and that some attempts will succeed. The one thing that the four jihadists in New York had going against them was an informer in their wider circle. It wasn't lack of initiative, or failure of will, or any shortage of capacity. Don't expect all such groups (or individuals) in the future to have OPSEC holes. Or for an FBI informant to be placed so conveniently.
War, folks. It's WAR. You can't wish it away. Or call it something else. It is what it is. I say we fight it, and win it.
And Godspeed to you, Private Long. MORE... Pvt Long's father speaks (h/t to B5).

The military is at War, America is at the mall! Until we can achieve education and understanding of the global threat at the household level, we will continue to be a nation of quasi-scholars educated only by the liberal media. Take it serious America, the bad guys are!!
This is tragic, but at the end of the day, what could be done to prevent it? LtCol P is right... if someone wakes up and decides, "today's the day", there ain't much you can do about it except remain vigilant and prepared to defend yourself. It doesn't matter if you're on recruiting duty or out with your family at the mall.
The debate about how to best defend this country in the age of terror is only beginning... and is way, way overdue. On the one extreme, we can put Muslims en masse in detention camps and target anyone we merely suspect of terrorist ties for assassination... essentially shred the Constitution. On the other extreme we simply sit on our hands and do nothing.
I believe there is a middle ground. We cannot merely "police" terrorism, but our nation (and especially our economy) cannot handle what is becoming an eternal war. Just as Rome could not afford endless wars against the barbarians and England could not sustain its empire with onstant "expeditions" around the globe, America is quickly finding itself incapable of similar sustained operations.
I don't think the current administration has the answer. But, then again, neither did the last.
Perhaps there is no clear-cut answer. That means we must work harder to understand the enemy, which is now reaching into the ranks of the misguided amongst our own youth. The tragedy is real, but I'm glad that this young man wasn't capable of bringing down 10, or 100, or even a thousand with him.
I hope we can remedy this situation before something even more tragic occurs.
Actually, this proves how unsuccessful-the idea of a "war" on terrorism really is. No amount of troops in Iraq or Afghanistan can prevent an American with a gun, and a crazy idea from doing the wrong thing.
Call this what it is-a crime.
True this act was conducted by an American with a gun, but what parameters are set forth to denote something a domestic crime vs. an act of domestic terror.
Was this just an a$$-hat trying to get his gun off and make a statement, was this a probe of domestic response to a quasi-terror hit by a larger group or was it one coverted muslim on a self initiated jihad? In any case, all avenues must be pursued and we should not let the media put a name to it, until a name has been put to it!!
Well, apparently he has been charged with one count of murder, one count of attempted murder, fifteen counts of terrorism, and use of a firearm in the commission of a felony.
It's under Arkansas state code, so I don't know what defines "terrorism", but the news explained it had to do with the presence of bystanders when the event occured and that these bystanders were considered the victims.
What if we call it genocide?
What a fearful person you must be. Terrified of some yak herdsmen with a grudge.
Quick, the dirty Ay-Rabbs are coming! Buy more guns! Abrogate more civil liberties and throw away more American values, as long as the gun cabinet stays full!
weel done

The FBI was aware of this guy, no? He'd been to Yemen. But, as a law enforcement matter instead of a real war, the FBI could not do anything about him until after the fact? Call me skeptical, but I think we could do more about this 'war' right at the point of our borders, if the right someones had the will.
Are military recruiters armed? Shouldn't they be?
