Arrogant, snarling, posturing, cruel; and when under the gun, craven and prostrate. That’s your average Somali gunman, ashore or afloat. You can– you must– respect him as an adversary because he gives as good he gets, and if you show any weakness you’ll regret it. If you live long enough. The bright side is that he understands the use of force, he expects to get hammered if he gets caught out. Charity, justice, fairness? Not in his vocabulary. If we want to really give him something to cry about, we should flatten his village, burn his boats, slaughter his flocks and scatter his family.
But instead we get him staying on our dime, his family sure to be brought over (good luck getting rid of them), and legal agitators flanking him. Hell, we’ll probably fly in khat shipments. Can’t have the little savage detoxing on us.
Ron Kuby, a New York-based civil rights lawyer, said he has been in discussions about forming a legal team to represent the Somalian.
“I think in this particular case, there’s a grave question as to whether America was in violation of principles of truce in warfare on the high seas,” said Kuby.
“This man seemed to come onto the Bainbridge under a flag of truce to negotiate. He was then captured. There is a question whether he is lawfully in American custody and serious questions as to whether he can be prosecuted because of his age.”
He’ll be laughing, and we’ll be weeping.
Laws need to be changed. In the meantime, it would be much cheaper to release him, and spend the money saved (which will be millions) on turning a few U.S. merchant ships that frequent the area in to “Q” ships, ready for next time….

We may want to go a step further, and reflag American merchantmen as USNS vessels and put detachments of either USMC or SEALS aboard them. This would make them warships and would change the whole equation. There is precedence in doing this, when Iran was attacking tankers in the Gulf, the US reflagged them. When dealing with these thugs we need to ensure they are taken out before they have a chance to take any hostages.
I understand why he was brought to NY, but this pirate trial has already become a media circus and it will only get worse. Ron Kuby would defend Hitler or Stalin if given the chance.
The pirate should have stood before a military tribunal on the USS Bainbridge and then executed.
Ron Kuby learned at the feet of the master, Bill Kunstler. Everyone involved in the trial might as well come dressrd like clowns because he’ll turn the proceeding into a circus. Should have just weighted the little pirate SOB down and dropped him overboard; see if he gets justice in the next life. In this one, he’ll be the hero of the New York liberal crowd who never met a terrorist they didn’t love. I’ll bet the NYT is just drooling.
I hope the little bastard gets off scot free…. that will show the stupidity of the Big Zero’s effort to turn terrorists into criminals or worse – victims – who deserve their day in court so their grievances can be heard.
