Michael Gerson Column in Today's Washington Post
By Townie 76
A interesting take on SECDEF's budget. "While the total defense budget should be larger in a time of war, it focuses resources and attention precisely where they are most needed: on our war fighters in Iraq, in Afghanistan -- and at places like Walter Reed."

Townie,
Three quick points:
1. The programs under consideration for cutting likely won't be cut due to magnanimous congresspeople saving hometown jobs.
2. Whether in time of war or peace, DOD always sacrifices the VA and family programs in order to maintain a warfighting capability. Cuts overall tend to mean cuts to Walter Reed, ACS, and yellow ribbon programs. This cultural history truly is lost on most journalists covering the Defense budget.
3. Vehicles aren't the core of FCS, or the most expensive part of it. These are just another trophy head for some one's wall.
