Courtesy of the Navy website and Navy Times, there are some telling pictures out today on the damage this fine warship suffered.

090321-N-9909C-211 BAHRAIN (March 21, 2009) The Los Angeles-class attack submarine USS Hartford (SSN 768) pulls into Mina Salman pier in Bahrain where U.S. Navy engineers and inspection teams will asses and evaluate damage that resulted from a collision with the amphibious transport dock ship USS New Orleans (LPD 18) in the Strait of Hormuz March 20. Overall damage to both ships is being evaluated. The incident remains under investigation. Hartford is deployed to the U.S. 5th fleet area of responsibility to support maritime security operations. There will be more to follow. Suffice it to say this is bad.
Ouch – Looks like good work not to lose her
If I’m not mistaken, in that first photo the Hartford is pointing straight at her nemesis in dock…
The real question is… is it worth it to repair her?
Hmm, it seems we’re off to a shaky start in this season of the international bumper boats tournament league. So far we’ve hit more friendly ships and inanimate rocks than anything on the other teams. Still, we’ve got time to recover; blasting some more pirates, clipping a Chinese destroyer, or “accidentally” running down a few Iranian speedboats would still put us back on track for this year’s finals.
Oh, oh– holy shit, that’s bad.
Aren’t the LA class subs modular?
Can they just pop a new conning tower on there?
If not it will join the long roll call of listing ships that have served the Navy. I know BR LtCol P remembers the old USS Iwo Jima.
When I first looked at the first photo, I thought Hartford was listing. But, after careful inspection of both pictures, it looks like Hartford is not listing and the entire sail was almost knocked off.
Hartford is lucky that her watertight integrity was not compromised and that the trunk remained in tact.
If Hartford sustained this much damage, I shudder to think about what New Orleans looks like.
At least the damage isn’t has bad as SAN FRANCISCO. Still it must have been quite a shock to the guys in their racks.
Say what you will EB must know what they’re doing.
It’s nice to see that Mina Salman still has that gray muck sky.
The sail is replacable as a unit. I’m wondering if any collateral damage was done to the top of the pressure hull. THAT’S expensive. I’m glad no one was hurt worse than they were.
