I think all will find this article interesting, whether one agrees with the opinions of General Sir Michael Jackson, http://www.telegraph.co.uk/comment/personal-view/3869106/Britains-Armed-Forces-will-leave-Iraq-with-heads-held-high.html.

It is striking that he blames the post-invasion violence solely on factional fighting. Saddam prepared for and led the initial guerrilla warfare: an in-place organization (M-14); stocks of weapons throughout the country; over-the-border support in Syria with lots of money.
Even his act of releasing all imprisoned criminals was almost certainly intended to cause security problems for the occupiers.
The truth of the matter is that the Brits got in over their heads in Basra, their ‘we don’t need no stinkin helmets’ idea was an abject failure. They bunkered up and let the Mahdi army run wild.
Their surrender without a shot being fired in the Guld to the Iranians was a prime example of this attitude.
The Iraqi Army finally came in with US support and routed the Mahdis. The Brits hid in their bunkers for a week before they dared to stick a nose out. And now the scurry back to the UK tails tucked between their legs. Was it their fault? Probably the blame goes to the Blair political crowd but the upper command could have resigned.
