Veteran's Day Benefit for SOC Jason Freiwald

By Bull Nav

Back in September, just prior to when he was to pin on Chief, Jason Freiwald was killed in action against Taliban in Afghanistan. He left behind a wife and young daughter.

For anyone in SE Michigan, a benefit is being held for him on Veteran's Day.

I would encourage anyone in the area to attend. As I understand it, most of the Chiefs who drill at NOSC Detroit will be attending.

Note that donations for those who can't attend can be mailed to the address noted on the flyer.

What a sad day for the small town of Armada. May the contributions this young man made be remembered forever. His selflessness should be considered a reminder to everyone that our freedom is not free and it takes a very brave soul to endure the challenges that this world confronts our armed forces everyday. My thoughts and prayers are with his family during this time of need. I hope the honor and respect that has been earned by his acts will but only help his family keep their heads held high... that they have a reason to be proud of what has been accomplished because of his diligence.

For the record, if I could have been there I would have. Jason was a friend of mine from High School and I think we are the only two military members from our graduating class. I tried to fly back via military transport for his memorial services but I never made it on a flight. I am currenlty stationed at a NATO HQ in the Netherlands and now feel terrible that I have not been able to make it to anything in his honor.

In a strange twist of fate, I just recently heard of Jason's passing. He and I were in IS "A" School together, but I lost track of his whereabouts shortly after his departure for BUD/S. It is a tragic loss, but he died serving his country to the fullest. My thoughts go out to his family....
