Totally Rad Armored Car of the Day

…would be the Rhodesian Selous Scouts’ Pig.

Word is that the Scouts ripped off a West German APC design, fixed it with a pair of Belgian 7.62mm MAGs, and used it to shred “Terrs” in the Rhodesian bush.

Due to international sanctions, the Rhodesian military had to develop most of their armor on their own — though they did receive a shipment of T-55 tanks from South Africa at one point.

Anyways…

There’s some more Rhodesian wheeled awesomeness here, should you find yourself interested.

Yes and the Rhodesian Light Infantry developed a killer little mine detection vehicle called the Pookie. They were great innovators. I think that parts of our buffalo were even based on their Pookie model.

If I recall correctly, I think that APC was based on a Unimog truck chassis. The slanted bodywork underneath may have been an early attempt at mine blast deflection too.

I believe the T-55s the Rhodies got hold of were captured in Angola by the SADF and then sold as a sanctions busting deal. They were needed to counter a feared Soviet backed invasion from Zambia in 1978/79 that never eventuated, in part because the Rhodesian SF units got too good at destroying Zambian bridges, making the logistical support needed for a conventional invasion impossible.

The T-55s were due to be sent to Uganda from Libya. They were interecepted by South Africa and sent to Rhodesia
