Anti-'89 Operative Unveiled!

We interrupt our regularly scheduled posting to bring you news from VMI. This is a joint, blue-green, BullNav-LtCol P post.

The ’89 Section of Op-For has uncovered the latest indignity inflicted on our class’s legacy by a hideous cabal that has operated for nearly 20 years. We recently learned that the Alumni brick– yours for only $2500!– bearing the name of Our Second 1st Captain, one Cadet D.G. Miller (OH), was pried loose and overturned, thereby obscuring his good name and rendering him all but unknown to current and future cadets. However, a sharp-eyed B&G crew noticed the discrepancy and corrected it. Blame has been laid on nameless ‘drunks.’

This incident marks the return of the incognito evil-doer, whose previous actions included repeatedly chiseling the name of Our Second 1st Captain from the plaque inside Jackson Arch. In one case, it was reported that the name of one Cadet Matthew G. StClair (MD) was then affixed to the spot, he being Our First 1st Captain, who through his independent turn of mind was found to be an unsuitable Regimental Commander. (Rumors that no shako could be found to fit his admittedly odd head shape are unfounded, but unfortunately persist.)

However, we now believe that we can unveil the prime suspect in these actions, now that the missing piece of evidence– i.e. ‘drunks’– has been supplied. Who is this miscreant, this known ’89-hater, this fork-tongued devil and arch-fiend? WE BELIEVE IT IS NONE OTHER THAN THIS MAN:

  1. SSG Jeff (USAR) says:

Dress whites. What an incredibly stupid uniform for the Army.

  2. Joel says:

Better than the new ASU though…

  3. Wild Goose says:

Please excuse my admittedly lacking knowledge, but who is this man, why is he wearing dress whites (the Army has dress whites? Thought it was only the Navy…) and why does he hate VMI?

  4. LtCol P says:

    Wild G:

He goes by the name Sam S. Walker, and was once Superintendent of VMI. During his unremarkable tenure, he incurred the wrath of the Class of ’89, and after a tense standoff in the fall of ’88 he was compelled to withdraw. This, however, was a short-lived victory, as it ushered in the Reign Of Scooter, a period of long steady decline otherwise known as VMI’s Long Winter’s Knapp.

And yes, the Army once had dress whites. I thought it was a right smart uniform.

  5. Wild Goose says:

    I see… thanks for the head’s up, P.

And I agree, Dress Whites are pretty cool. That was one of the reasons why I tried to enlist into the Malaysian Navy (yes, I’m from enemy territory). Busted the physical, alas -_-

  6. Neal says:

I still remember the rainy night that all the first class rank insignia oddy found itself nailed to the Supes door in some semblance of rune, although experts today have concluded the original symbol was that of an 89.

  7. GM Cassel AMH1(AW) USN RETIRED says:

Class of 1989. Lemme see, in 89 I was at VA-128, NAS Whidbey Island, WA for the second time. I had been in about 16 years and had been a first class(E-6) for 8 years.

You guys are making me Old!

  8. GM Cassel AMH1(AW) USN RETIRED says:

    So you think that’s ugly?!?!?!

Has anyone seen the new Navy Service Uniform for E-1 to E-6? Now that thing is UGLY! At least the uniform board hasn’t tried to bring back the Uncle Elmo coat and tie for E-6 and below. I got issued the zoot suit in 73 at RTC San Diego. As soon as the Jumper Blues and Whites came back, I purchased immediately.

A young BM2(SW) recruiter here in Wichita told me the main reason was the seabag had too many uniform articles in it and it was hard to carry. Over the years I lugged around the 2 sets of coat and tie blues with combination cover, trop whites(now known as summer whites), winter blues(Johnny Cashes), pull over polyester blend utilities, dungarees, skivvies, black and white socks, peacoat, raincoat, working jacket, PT gear, flight deck boots, dress low-quarter shoes(no corfam for this kid, leather only), coveralls and flight deck gear(float-coat, cranial helmet w/hearing protection, green jerseys and assorted fatigue trousers).

And I got married both times in Dress Blue. The first was in the zoot suit, which my Dad(SGT, USA) always made fun of. The second and current was in the Dress Blue Jumper with all my medals. This one has lasted over 25 years.

Yeah, so kids nowadays have a bitch. Get over it.

    TOOO FUNNY!

I’d forgotten about your second 1st CPT. What was the step-off about? Not enough ice cream at Club Crozet?

    in humor, DaveO
