There stands Jackson like a stone wall

By Richard S. Lowry

I am settled in my new job. Today I drove a mile from my new apartment to the Manassas Battlefield.

Click for a few more photos of my afternoon adventure:

The Union named their battles after rivers, while the Confederacy named theirs after the closest town. Thus, Bull Run and Manassas are the same battles.

The Union moved their force to the west of the Confederates. They set up on a hill above Sudly Road, facing a treeline.

Jackson moved his force south and selected a perfect position to defend, along a treeline on the high ground. Union soldiers would have had to attack up hill for 300 yards, just to get to Jackson's "stone wall."

I think I am going to like it here in Virginia.

I know exactly where that is...
on the way to Springfield, but not quite.

Beautiful place. Close to Belvoir, too... :)

Stonewall Jackson talk will *always* resonate on a VMI blog...

Virginia has a crapload of Civil War battlefields. Went to Fredericksburg earlier in the year, visited Maryes' Heights. Great stuff, even if I'm STILL trying to figure out wtf Burnside was thinking.

That statue of Jackson is quite a hunk. Was he a body builder, or is that a bit of artistic license?

Hey, thanks for the pics, btw, for those of us living so far away from that history to every actually get to tour and see.

Welcome to the heart of Civil War history. Your next staff ride should be to Chancellorsville, then across I-95 to visit the place where Jackson died...

Revel in the history while you're here -- it's one of the best bits of being in Virginia.

Welcome to VA! I used to live in Alexandria and hung out at Manassas whenever I could, I love walking those fields. The other people that have posted here are right, VA has so much to offer if you love history. I am down in Richmond now.....it's quite a state! Welcome!
