For Liberty!
By Lt Col P
Happy Independence Day!
This is the greatest day to be an American, the day where we revisit the magnificent promise of liberty made in 1776 and secured countless times since, and celebrate the blessings of the singular nation we call home.
In every stage of these Oppressions We have Petitioned for Redress in the most humble terms: Our repeated Petitions have been answered only by repeated injury. A Prince, whose character is thus marked by every act which may define a Tyrant, is unfit to be the ruler of a free people.
(Them was fighting words!)
So enjoy the cook-outs, the fireworks, the beer, and maybe the guns too. (Guns first, please, then beer.) Forget about the naysayers, and just have a good day. Here's to the glory of the United States, and damnation to our enemies!

Amen.
I've always been particularly struck by the following phrase in the Declaration's "point-by-point indictment of King George's gross misrule and petty tyrannies," the one accusing the king of "death, desolation and tyranny, already begun with circumstances of Cruelty & perfidy scarcely paralleled in the most barbarous ages, and totally unworthy the Head of a civilized nation." Considering what had already transpired in parts of the Spanish empire, such language would have been more than a bit bombastic even in 1776. From our own perspective, knowing of the "cruelty and perfidy" that transpired in the Civil War, the war in the Philippines, the two world wars, etc., etc., King George seems a piker.
"Here's to the glory of the United States, and damnation to our enemies!"
I'll toast to that!

Sir,
I wish I would have had the chance to share a beverage with you on this fine day, but I will take a rain check until we see each other again.
This is one of my favorite days of the year. This holiday means so much to me, being a Marine, a veteran and an American; the independence of my nation and the lives that have been lost over generations to continually secure that freedom and independence are the proud ghosts of this nations history and those that the warriors of my generation should take heed from and live up to.
God Bless the Marine Corps and God Bless America!!!!
I hope you all have a wonderful day with freinds and family.
