Gun-Day Sunday: AK On Deck
By Lt Col P
Check out the new gun, a Romanian WASR-10 from Century Arms:

I got it off the always outstanding GunBroker.com, a scratch auction that popped up for what seemed to be just a couple of hours. Came with two (2) magazines and a bayonet. (Plus two rough and ready slings, and some assorted odd pouches and frogs, and one wacky cleaning kit that stows in what looks like a muzzle brake that got separated from its muzzle.)
My, but it's a rough piece. Not that I didn't expect it to be, but still. Not a problem, I intend to give it a workout and test its legendary reliability. I've already broken it down and put it back together several times, and started to get used to the COMPLETELY DIFFERENT ergos-- selector switch, charging handle, and magazine release. When I first mounted it, my right thumb immediately flipped up to seek out the selector switch, which of course wasn't there.
I bought the gun primarily because the AK is a system I don't know at all, and I figured I should know it. I look forward to it, especially since 7.62x39 is so damn cheap.
OK, I'm going to open up the comments field for suggestions from the AK-literate amongst the faithful Op-Forians. One thing-- I'm not interested in turning it into a match gun. I want to leave it pretty much as is. What do I need to do or know before I take it to the range?
Lastly... With the bayonet attached, and in honor of its Romanian heritage, I believe I shall call it "Vlad The Impaler."

I checked out some of the WASR-10s at a few of the local Dunham's up here. I was not impressed with the forged and stamped parts that make up this weapon: rough is an understatement (also, they were all "single-stack", so my quest continues).
I am curious to hear how yours performs...for future (possibly the very near future) reference.
Joel,
I think it depends on the factory. My Chi-Commie is as reliable as a swiss watch, although the gas tube is off-kilter. I think the biggest downside to a foreign made AK is the ATF rules - there's not a lot you can do to improve on them, and, depending on the factory, they really might need the improvement.
I think you should just take it to the range and put a couple of hundred rounds through it. If the barrel doesn't melt and the stock screws don't shake loose (no shit, there I was on the range when my stock fell off) then you have a pretty good piece right there.
As for more magazines, don't really remember if the WASR 10 is double stacked, but if it is get the East German steel-type, those are the best in my experience.
The only thing you need to know before taking this little honey to the range is that you shouldn't expect to hit the broad side of a barn with it. I too own an AK-variant, and while they will shoot all day long, accuracy has much to be desired.
Remember, comrade Kalishnikov designed a "People's Weapon" for a peasant army. And much of that design was "borrowed" from the German StG-44. The thing will shoot, but don't expect a tack-driver.
Don't get me wrong, I love the hell out of mine, but it is strictly a "plinker" that I use for drilling old coffee cans.
Bottom line, if you bought the rifle for slaughtering old beer cans at 50 yards, you'll love it. For serious rifle work... mmmm, not so much.
Marcus
Um...
"This is my rifle! This is my gun!"
"This is for killing! This is for fun!"
If it's a single stack WASR, the mag well can be opened up to take a "real" AK 30 rd mag by a 'smith. I have a buddy who bought one, had the mag well operated on, and runs Bulgarian poly mags in it. The gun runs and runs until the cows come home, but 100 yard groups look like your pattern testing a new choke in your turkey shotgun.
I have one of those... double stack mag and all.
The sights required work ... more than just tappng the front sight over a bit ... a gunsmith had to move the whole front sight over.
Problem number two with it is ... since I believe it was converted from single stack to double stack magazine ... there is only one mag that fits it .. I bought a few standard AK mags the locking latch on them has to be lowered ... or a new magazine latch attached to the weapon itself.
But ammo is cheap.

In all honesty, I think it's who makes it as to whether it's a good weapon or not.
Our terp carried a CHI-COMM made AK... it was a worthless piece of shit that jammed all the time.
