I guess I just don't understand...
By Bull Nav
So I'm driving on I94 Friday night headed for drill at NAVSTA Great Lakes. I have been making this trip for 16 months now, so I have all the good radio stations picked out so I can rock the whole way there.
Just past Kalamazoo, a commercial comes on WIRX and I don't understand a word they are saying. My high school Spanish just ain't what it used to be, but I pick up a couple of words here and there.
Towards the end of the spot I hear "Guardia Nacional" and then it dawned on me: this was a recruiting commercial for the Michigan National Guard.
I was kinda shocked.
I mean, I understand marketing and hitting your target audience, but what message does it send when you advertise for part of our armed forces in a foreign language? Say they take a kid with no English, how does his leadership deal with that? How is he going to be an effective part of the unit?
No, I don't understand it at all.
'Course, I don't understand this either...

It floored me when I got pulled out of the IRR to active duty in 2003 and saw military wall posters in Spanish.
Keep that up and you'll have a repeat of the late, great, unable to understand itself, Soviet Army.
I agree with John's sentiment though not for illegals. Those that wish to join in this way need to apply while outside our boarders at a US embassy.
If you want to become a U.S. citizen and are willing to serve in it's armed forces then by all means - step right up.
We could do something like the French Foreign Legion. Make the recruits go through acclimation courses (US History, English, etc) concurrently with their military training. After 5 years they can leave as citizens.
You're willing to fight for my rights? I'm willing to call you brother .. or sister.
Donde esta la biblioteca??
You've not seen the California National Guard, have you? The "Other Ranks" are largely Latino, but then California is a "minority-majority" state now.
I know the situation isn't completely analogous, but the Canadian Forces functions in both english and french without any major problems, and has for years. Of course, they're both official national languages up here.
Gotta call you short-sided on this one Bull. My family has been on North American soil 11 generations as retired conquistadores and would not be uncommon to have a spanish radio station on at times. To associate the language with a guy selling oranges on a freeway off-ramp or one soliciting work in a Home Depot parking lot is incredibly shallow. Follow the link for a related story.
More importantly, did no one read the link to the article about that enemy-coddler, traitor and American-hater Carter? How can someone who was once the president, which presumably means he had a basic level of intelligence, and oh by the way was ass-raped on the world stage by Hamas' handlers, honestly think talking to those who want us converted or dead will solve the problems in the Middle East? The article LtCol P spoke about says it all. Carter is a disgrace and a loser at that.
Fred,
The German side of my family has only been here 3 generations ans I don't see or hear recruiting commercials in German. The West side of Michigan were Bull was has a large Dutch heritage, no commercials in Dutch either.
I will say that in the corner of the state where Bull was also has recently gotten a large influx of migrant workers as well.
Fred - I DO NOT associate the Spanish language with someone trying to make a living. My issue is that if you are going to recruit someone who does not speak English, you are going to have problems until he/she learns English.
I have no problems with immigrants because that is what this country is founded upon. I am first-generation American: my grandparents on my mother's side were displaced persons (from Estonia) following WWII and emigrated here (legally) to the US in the late '40s. Their attitude was come to America, learn the language, and fit in...and be as successful as you can. My mother tells the story of being in Kindergarten and in tears because the teacher could not understand her. Her father's answer: learn the language.
I do have a problem with not securing the borders properly and allowing illegal immigration. That helps no one.
Chris - I was wondering if anyone was going to catch/comment on that...

actually, I'm all for illegals who want to earn their citizenship through military service.
Being able to communicate that to them is --I suppose- a start.
