There's Something to be said about classics

By John

Forgive the Van Halen Hagar soundtrack, but even the harshest critics have gotta admit... it's kinda appropriate given the content.

Anyway, I love the A-4 Blue Angels --way more than the Hornet-- reminds of the first time I saw 'em as a kid.

John--kudos on posting my all-time favorite video from my all time favorite group. Here's hoping VH keeps their schedule for 27-April. Keep up the entertaining posts. It's nice to know others have a similar perspective on geo-security issues.

That's the video that launched my military career. Didn't have the grades or stomach to fly, but that video motivated the hell out of me. I've seen the Blue Angels perform live at least a dozen times now, even been in the cockpit of an F-18 for a crash crew checkout. Still, almost brings a tear to the eye to see this again.

OT, and appropos of nothing being said here -- except she had an F-18 sitting on her deck -- I woke up this morning to CV74, the Stennis, sounding her horn four times as she came out of Bremerton through Rich Passage. But instead of heading out into the shipping lanes, she went into the waters between village of Manchester and Blake Island, stopped, did a 180 degree turn, and then headed out into the shipping lanes. I thought at first, stupidly no doubt, that they were going to bring her into the Manchester Navy fuel dock to take on jet fuel. I found a news article saying she is out for five days of trials ("water testing", as the AP says -- is that real Navy talk?). I kinda hoped that NCA decided to send her on a diplomatic mission to Iran -- a meet and greet to thank them for attacking the Green Zone on Easter Sunday.

F4's at Otis, now that was a show. Almost didnt need smoke and the almost BOOM was incredible.

AWESOME!!! Is this the actual video for "Dreams?"

Jason   ·  March 25, 2008 05:51 AM

I got to see the Thunderbirds a couple of weeks back doing their, well I forget the actual term but "certification" works, show - it's where they demonstrate that they are capable of performing their airshow to spec - the first airshow of the season was the next weekend.

All I can say is that those Blue Angel A4s were a lot tighter and lower than they let the -16s fly.

I love to Scooters flying (except in Top Gun - that movie irks me for some reason). Thanks for the post and reminder of a time when VH wasn't a side show for David Lee Roth or a run up for Eddie Van Halen's kid.

Man, I haven't seen this in ages. I love this video. I was still at MCAS Yuma when this hit the airwaves. It was a homerun then, and it still is.

Look out..."low-brow" comment follows (as Mr. "r" would say)...

Man, I dare I say the old A-4 Angels look to be flying tighter, lower, and a little more agressively than the F-18 Bug pilots...

I never got to see any other Blue Angels line up than Hornets, so I can't speak for in-person...but man that video (specifically, the flying) rocks.

I've seen the Blues perform both in the A-4s and the F-18s. The A-4s were a better show. Yes, the Hornet has more excess power, but the turn radius on the A-4 show was much tighter...you could follow the airplanes all the way through the show behind you. Much faster-paced performance.

If anyone is curious to see what this year's USAF Thunderbird's look like, as seen through a digicam set to video mode that desperately needs it's lens cleaned, go to http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qTF-yN8j7No

And then check out the others that I posted. I basically did one video per pass. They aren't great (or even good) videos, but I also had less than an hours warning that we were going to see the show.

This is still one of the most awesome Naval Aviation videos. Van Hagar or not-its cool and I killed more than few brain cells in my youth putting this song on the juke box in (whole in the wall bar in _________ ).

And there are no Hornets! That's a good thing. I had this up on my blog for a while but I thought that U-tube had taken it down. Glad it is back up.

the A-4's where the best. I've always loved the angels since I first saw them (around 1975) the A-4's allowed them to crunch in a tighter formation. Also has anyone noticed the bigger size of the F-18 from the A-4. the tight formation makes it really cool to see that they are really working it. Also we don't want any fender rubbing with any of these jets.
