Satellite Picture of the Day
By John
Who knows, if these catch on... maybe I'll make it a series or something. Sometimes when I'm bored, I check out sat imagery of naval bases and military airfields. In other news, I'm a complete tool.
Russian naval aircraft outside Murmansk:

Don't see any Bears. The only swept-wing a/c is in the northern revetment... and that looks like an airliner or some sort of cargo plane.
There are a couple of straight-wing two-engine planes... might be Il-28 BEAGLES.
The irregular parking indicates a boneyard, but there are some aircraft still parked in revetments. It could be a poorly-maintained airbase (likely, considering the state of the Russian armed forces) or simply a base that was abandoned at the end of the Cold War.
Russia doesn't have the same environmental laws that we do... or a population that is as passionate about it. I wouldn't put it past them to simply have abandoned air or naval bases lying around rusting away.
I dunno, some of the aircraft are parked properly. I wouldn't say boneyard.
No doubt you're right about the abandoned air/naval bases though Joel.
Zoom out a couple of times and scroll north. You'll find a couple of warships in a harbor. Couldn't ID. It has been a few years since VMI NROTC classes (hahaha).
Joel,
not simply abandonded, though, they do take down the weapons and other 'serious' stuff; plus, the metal mostl likely will be cut and sold, if not by the officers than by civilians. So this one does not really look like a boneyard...
maybe the "clutter" is just show.
If you wander down the taxi-way and turn right down another taxi-way (just past the two bombers in revetments) a squat triangular shadow gives away an "almost" undetectable hanger of considerable size.
Fighter Hider?
It is a neat excercise in IMINT analysis. I am hardly an expert... but this is fun.
Big, totally empty airbase to the left, as well.
IL-38 Mays in the mix?
Cool, I looked around with google earth and found what looks like a sub in dry dock nearby.

I see Bear bombers and a few Mays, but where are the fighters? Is this a boneyard?
