LAKE ERIE GETS SOME

By Bull Nav

LAKE ERIE FIRING.JPG
080220-N-XXXXX-025 PACIFIC OCEAN (Feb 20, 2008) At a single modified tactical Standard Missile-3 (SM-3) launches from the U.S. Navy AEGIS cruiser USS Lake Erie (CG 70), successfully impacting a non-functioning National Reconnaissance Office satellite approximately 247 kilometers (133 nautical miles) over the Pacific Ocean, as it traveled in space at more than 17,000 mph. President George W. Bush decided to bring down the satellite because of the likelihood that the satellite could release hydrazine fuel upon impact, possibly in populated areas. I know those guys are excited. BZ to all the folks that made this happen.

I wonder what our Far Eastern friends think...

UPDATE: I found this cool video on the Phibian's website.

I must say, I think this is great that we are showing this to the world. I know China shot down a satellite last year, but we did this from a ship at sea.

And no matter what anyone thinks, if we really want to, our ships can still show up unannounced on someone's front doorstep...

Somewhere the ghost of Ronald Reagan is smiling. I wish I had a list of everyone who said to me that we would never be able to do something like this, so I could e-mail them the link and ask, "what do you think now?"

I love the picture with the "Don't give up the ship" and the bell in the background.

Nice shot Squidies!

F the naysayers and God Bless the Navy! Good shooting, boys. O.H. Perry would be proud.

Yes, the Navy did an excellent job all around but don't forget about the Missile Defense Agency! We are the ones in DoD who have taken the flak and spent the money to make missile defense, of which Aegis is an element, not a stand alone system, a reality, on order of President Bush. There were army, Cold War-era land-based and sea-based radars, USAF satellites and a complex C2BMC system underneath the fanfare.

Wow, talk about a good shot! Good going Navy.

mindy abraham   ·  February 21, 2008 06:49 PM

that was an excellent shot! Bravo! I am very happy, the naysayers can go screw themselves and the rest of the world now knows not to screw with us...

Just to be sure..

THAT shot, given the shear physics, not to mention the balistics, azmith calcs tragec and the such. AND uploaded from the working innards of a simple HAZE GRAY AND UNDER WAY SHIP OF THE LINE. Gentlemen, and I am not the first one to make this observation, to place this event in proper perspective, it was like hitting a big bullet with a little bullet at a pre-determined place and time.
BAHUFFA-A!! (Translated) Awesome Shot!!

Salute to the sailors of the USS Lake Erie! And hats off to those that rode out the storm to create and field this capability!

One Shot, One Kill.

Just like a Navy field goal against army.

John   ·  February 22, 2008 05:50 PM

...or should that be air force????

John   ·  February 22, 2008 05:52 PM

I liked the "hydrazine" excuses for the reason to knock it out.lol Everytime you see a F16 fly over it too has a load of hydrazine in it!
As was pointed out, the ability to knock out a space object from the deck of a rolling ship is unreal and I hope the Chicoms and Soviets took notice.
Yes President reagan is smiling!
