I haven’t done a Sunday Gun-Day post in a while– I know commenter Mule, for one, is not pleased about that, and I promise to do better– but I do have a Sunday Fun-Day post.
One of my favorite places in the world is Whitegrass Cross Country Skiing Center in Canaan Valley, WV. It’s a nordic ski nirvana, and I try to get there once a year, just to keep my hat in the ring, so to speak. This year, who knows, with a small one at home and another on the way. We’ll see. But that doesn’t stop me from day-dreaming.
I lifted some photos shamelessly from their site. Here are two that say it all:
Oh, they have plenty of downhilling available:
Just for comparison’s sake I did a quick check of the rates for one of Whitegrass’s downhill neighbors. Highway robbery! Moms and Dads take note– you can score a day of healthy, low-impact mid-week family fun at Whitegrass for about thirty bucks, rentals included. That’s less than ONE adult lift ticket at the big downhill place. And it’s great PT also, from legs to shoulders.
This extraordinarily well-written article appeared in Cross Country Skier magazine about five years ago, penned by a man who clearly has a keen eye on events and a lust for life. It remains, I believe, the last word on the subject.
The place is fantastic, and Chip, the owner-operator, is worth the trip alone. Try it, you’ll like it. You might never go back to “normal” downhilling.

Hey you could always come out here. I ski Vail, Keystone, A-Basin, and Breck regularly… have a season pass to Keystone and A-Basin. Can’t beat the Rockies!
FYI – Keystone has awesome military discounts.
I had my own “Saturday-funday.”
I guess…
A 12-mile run down the snow-covered country roads around here…on the bright side, it did not snow too hard and it was warm–27F.
Don’t worry sir, I picked up some of the slack for you at the range this past Sunday. I tried to put enough rounds downrange for the both of us. Dirty job, but somebody’s got to do it…
