Petraeus Eyed for NATO Command?
By Charlie
The Department of Defense is considering moving the main architect of a troop "surge" strategy, Gen. David Petraeus, out of Iraq and giving him a top NATO command job, The New York Times reported on its website late Jan. 20.Citing an unnamed senior Pentagon official, the newspaper said the department was weighing "a next assignment for Petraeus," now the top U.S. military commander in Iraq, and that the job of NATO supreme commander was a possibility.
"He deserves one and that has also always been a highly prestigious position," the report quotes the official as saying. "So he is a candidate for that job, but there have been no final decisions and nothing on the timing."
Coming off of Gates’ comments last week about NATO –if there is one man who can fix the endemic problems that the alliance has, it is Petraeus.

Look what it did for Wesley Clarke's career..... All kidding aside, is this really all that prestigious? I agree with "S" why pull him away from Iraq? I'd rather see him finish the job, then line him up for the joint chiefs.....
I agree with S and Old Tanker. My first reaction when hearing the story was, "WHAAAAT?!" He's doing a fantastic job, turning things around over there. Finally, positive results are being realized. And it's under his command strategy. So, why the hell pull him out?! HELLO-O?! Let him finish the job he started! Someone (or someones) need to pull their heads out of their a$$es. Not trying to deny him a rightful and due promotion, BUT. The job in the theater of war is FAR more important. Let him finish the job where he is, THEN send him to NATO to kick some well deserving butt. Jeez.
This is just plain bizarre. If this is true (which will really have to be verified since it is from the new york times), I just don't get it. Do leaders wake up in the morning and say, 'Gee, we are really kickin' ass at this...so how can we f' it up?' This conflict is not about the prestige and promotion track of an individual. Go out into the corporate world if you want that. Internal politics? Who knows...but this is just plain weird.
Don't count on General Petraeus leaving Iraq any time soon.

Can he do another tour in Iraq? Why remove the equivalent of the head coach of the New England Patriots to a coach in the euro axe wound league? I heard the Nobel Peace prize is a highly 'prestigious' award also just like I guess the NATO position. Then again, the story IS from the New York Times, so we'll see what the real facts are. What a shame if he is not allowed to finish the job.
