No True Glory

By John

Look, it's no secret that I have a total man-crush on Marine General Mattis. So when I find out that one of my favorite actors is going to play one of my favorite generals in a film adaption of a book by one of my favorite authors...

omg, swoon.

Translation, in order: Harrison Ford will play the role of General Mattis in No True Glory: The Battle for Fallujah.

Looks, it's kind of old news. Blackfive blogged about the casting back in 2004.... but I hadn't heard it until now, so it's new to me. According to IMDB, No True Glory is slated for a 2008 release. Here's an news clip from 2004:

Hollywood "Marines" could soon be taking orders from actor Harrison Ford if Hollywood carries out plans to cast the leading man as former 1st Marine Division commander Maj. Gen. James Mattis in an upcoming film about the Marines' assault on Fallujah last spring.

In what entertainment writers say would be the first feature length film about the war in Iraq, Universal Pictures plans to base the movie on the upcoming book, "No True Glory: The Battle for Fallujah" by Bing West, a Marine veteran and former U.S. assistant secretary of defense, according to the Reuters news agency.

I like the timing. One year after a shotgun blast full of Hollywood anti-war films tank at the BO, we get a nitty-gritty Blackhawk Down style flick that will (presumably) focus on the individual heroism and ultimate nobility of US Marines. If No True Glory does as well as BHD did, it'd send a pretty clear message to Hollywood.

Courages sells.

Weakness doesn't.

What, you think 300 was a smash because of the costumes?

Here's hoping they do this flick right.

With a title like "No True Glory", I wouldn't bet that Hollywood has broken with its anti-war past.
I'm afraid that best that can be hoped for is a depiction of brave Marines, fighting for a war that they were too stupid to know was illegal, immoral, unwinnable, etc...

Harrison Ford? Isn't he like, 10-15 years too old to play a Major General?

I've seen some depressing notes about the script being altered to show more US casualties and to make the terrorists appear more sympathetic. Unless Mr. West has a strong degree of editorial control, I am prepared to be massively disapointed. The casting of Harrison Ford is poor choice for starters.

Films like 300 aside (and really, how many in that vein have been out in the last several years?), true heroes, fighting the good fight against a clearly defined, evil enemy, are sadly out of fashion among the H'wood types.

RayJ, "No True Glory" is the title of the book upon which the film is based, a book which was written by Bing West. The man is a Vietnam-era Marine with a son who served as a Force Recon officer in OIF. Hollywood had absolutely nothing to do with the title. The title of "No True Glory" comes from the final paragraph of West's book, where he says that there will be no true glory for our Soldiers and Marines until American society remembers that they are aggressive warriors and heroes, NOT victims to be pitied by the anti-war crowd.

Slab's Brother, thank you for the clarification. Like Roachman, I hope that Mr. West is given the level of editorial necessary to make sure Hollywood doesn't redefine his message.

Ray, according to IMDB... Bing and his son Owen are both credited with the screenplay. Should be a great flick.

I have just started working on my next book project, "New Dawn - The fight for Fallujah." As before, I am finding that the complete story of Operation Phantom Fury has not yet been told.

I fear that this movie will have lots about the Blackwater ambush and the "Hell House," but not much more.

I hope I am wrong.

Last I heard, "No True Glory" was stuck in what Hollywood calls "Development Hell," which means it has hit an impasse and it's unlikely it will ever finish production. They've been talking about making this movie since '05, and it just seems to have fallen to the wayside. Hollywood is far more interested in making movies like "Redacted" and "Battle for Haditha" than it is in making movies that would actually highlight the bravery and professionalism of our military.

Maybe this one will get done at the same time as Bruce Willis' "Deuce Four"....

Still not as bad as Tears of the Sun, which had Bruce Willis (at 48 years) as an O-3 and Tom Skerritt (at 70 years) as an O-6.

Beware the "Sum of All Fears" re-wrire,
where our gallant Marines go house-to-house against Austrian "neo-fascists" as opposed to head-chopping Islamo-fascists.

One would have thought Tom Clancy, of all people, would be able to retain some creative control.

Hey there RayJ, thanks for the enlightening comment about us United States Marines. I have fought in Iraq three separate times and can tell you first-hand that it is for a very good reason. I've had elderly men, women and young adults come up to me in tears thanking us for what we have done for them. I have noticed the changes over the past 5 years since the conflict began, and it has progressively been better every time I have been deployed. I am extremely proud to serve my country and indirectly defend you, you ignorant bastard! I have one thing to say to all you who oppose us being in Iraq, "If you haven't been there, then shut the fuck up." Maybe you could just keep your comfortable civlian ass back at home, watching everybody loves raymond while I deploy overseas away from my wife and child to fight for a cause you couldn't understand because you believe reports from a media that isnt' always seeing the positive side. I've seen more humanitarian efforts out there than combat by far. I would say about 95% of my time in Iraq as an infantry squad leader has been providing assistance to the Iraq people and 5% quelling an insurgency, but of course you just watch television showing you the 5% throughout the whole country that depicts only negative stories. You show me how mind-blowingly pathetic you people really are. Thank you for your support! Keep the ignorance alive.

for the very political ignorant media brainwashed civilian ray j. first of all your welcome for your freedom that people like myself very well provide. second, i find it hard to argue with someones comment, but let me leave you with one thing...i respect an INSURGENT more than i respect a sorry motherf**kers like you for the fact that they at least chose a side. and last, if i were a communist or an insurgent infiltrating the united states (god forbid) soil, for wrath, you best believe im gonna come for confused sorry motherf**kers like you and put a bullet in your head.

Who ever the grunt squad leader is...Semper Fi Brotha! I was in Fallujah in 2004 with 1/8. If the movie is anything like the book, it will reflect that the fighters were nearly all foreign and the locals couldn't have been more grateful for what the Marines did. I trust Bing & Owen West to make sure the real story gets told. And I did more humanitarian duties there than I did combat. You can find more random acts of kindness and generosity on a regular basis in that country than you ever will in the US.

I'm sure Bing & Owen West will make sure the real story gets out. I did more humanitarian ops than I did combat too. There are more random acts of kindness & generosity in the country on a daily basis than there is in the US. The American people really need to see the good side of what we're doing over there, because the media is screwing us. Liberal or conservative, I don't care, just tell the truth.
