Marines to Afghanistan?
By Lt Col P
From Fox News, "Report: Marines Seek Iraq Exit, Redeployment To Afghanistan."
Top Marine Corps brass is lobbying the Pentagon to allow its forces to vacate Iraq for the purpose of leading the fight in Afghanistan, according to a New York Times report.Marine Corps Commandant James T. Conway proposed the idea during a session with Defense Secretary Robert Gates and Adm. Mike Mullen, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, and several regional military commanders, said the article.
The NYT article actually has some interesting information. I can see some definite strong points to the argument.

The jury's still out on this one because:
- I don't understand if the Commandant's suggestion is a solution to C4ISR issues (and if so how does the Navy support this)
- Logistics, logistics, logistics. The Army, Air Force, and to an extent the Navy do the Marines' heavy lifting.
** I understand the answers won't be forthcoming on this blog - just how my mind works...
- There is significant potential, by aligning the different theaters under single-service-oriented commands, to raise the level of pain on terrorists - I'm all for that!!!
- Through this alignment, each theater also becomes a laboratory, but instead of rats in the maze back in Scott Shipp, it's systems and tactics done in a pure service environment.
- Will the Marines continue the experiment of using Social Science professors as Human Terrain Experts?
Just my first thoughts on reading your's and John's posts on this topic.
