Now an SSN and an HSL Squadron

LTCOL P set me up a couple of weeks ago, and I have been a little busy so I am severely delinquent in making this post two more of our Brother Rats.
First off, CDR Ed Herrington took command of the USS HAWAII (SSN776) in August. There are several articles and links at the Navy League's USS HAWAII website here. Ed and I are the only guys from 89 who made it through Nuclear Power School and went on to submarines. He is very sharp and will do well in command.
Secondly, CDR Rick Skiff is the CO of HSL-42, the Proud Warriors, in Jacksonville, FL. Note that HSL-42 flies the SH-60B Seahawk which was recently featured here at OP-FOR.
Congratulations to both of our BRs, who both received engineering degrees from VMI (take note John).

As a nuke sailor myself who went through in the days when Rickover himself grilled all the guys in the program before giving them the seal of approval, I have to think you later day nukes got off light.
Also as an enlisted puke, I have to express the feeling that any officer who survived was just because we saw you were not such a walking danger pad about to go off in some silly way that could put our life on the line.
I have seen to many decisions made by to many JO's that would make you question their grasp of the facts and in some cases their sanity.
After all they were the guys who sat right near and had the whole permission to operate the "chicken switches".
But if it came down to the real deal it would not have mattered.
When I reported aboard the 688 and started my quals I hit the DC manual and was greeted with the paragraph that stated that flooding was no longer a credible argument and that an uncontrolled surface was the biggest threat that class faced.
When I read that I dropped the book in disgust and sat and stewed for a while and then went up to radio and fired off a fifteen page speedletter as to why that was a whole bunch of garbage and with a lot of non pc sailor language thrown in to boot.
Two weeks later we got the ECN correcting that passage and the thanks they gave me was booting me off the sub that I had chosen after my shore duty and throwing me to the wolves by putting me on a Nuke birdfarm.
I surprised them by thriving there and getting the highest recommendations from my new captain.
Amazing how all that works.
I will even give you a hint and tell you my speed letter proved neither flooding or uncontrolled surfaces were the biggest danger that class faced.
Now you have to figure out just what I was thinking about and proved beyond a shadow of a doubt.
Another hint
The ECN I mentioned turned the whole paragraph into a new direction but in no way did it address the issue I had presented.

I mean, that's an accomplishment that most first class privates can only dream of.
