Another reason to be ready...

By Bull Nav

I have said many times, "Carry."

I am, of course, referring to legally carrying a concealed pistol, not only for self-defense, but for any situation in which others may be placed in danger by someone who would do them harm.

I also advocate that anyone who does not or cannot carry do what you can to be ready. Pay attention to your surroundings. Always have a plan. Follow Rule 21.

So after this morning's run, I am watching the news, and I watch this little tidbit (from WXYZ Channel 7 in Detroit):

Doctor-in-Training Caught in Park with AK-47

Last Update: 9/12 6:13 pm

Federal authorities are investigating a Wayne State University medical student who was arrested in a Dearborn park with a loaded AK-47.

His name is Houssein Zorkot and he is (was?) a third year med student at Wayne State University in Detroit.

No one has given an explaination as to why the Dearborn Police found him Saturday night in a park with a loaded AK-47 (I realize that it was not an AK-47, but a knock-off; however, that is what was reported), in dark clothing, with his face blackened. Apparently the FBI is now investigating the case.

Oh, yeah, on his website he says he supports Lebanon and the Resistance. Take a look at it.

I don't understand why more is not being reported on this. The Dearborn Mayor apparently did not want people making a connection between this individual and the 9/11 anniversary.

I will make the connection.

This is the type of home-grown individual that the people of the US need to be aware of. I am not saying to persecute every Arab-American, or anyone with dark skin. I am saying that folks need to know that this type of individual exists right here in the USA and we all need to be ready at all times.

Head on a swivel.

Situational awareness.

Or, as I learned in the Boy Scouts, "Be Prepared."

Ya, I saw this last night. I noticed they had a flier saying to contact the Mayor rather than the Police Dept. Political correctness run amok. Does anyone wonder why Dearborn is known as Dearbornistan...........

I understand your caution, but I just don't have enough time going around giving all of these people the benefit of the doubt.

Much better to follow your original instincts and very closely follow all of these people and act quickly when you feel the hairs rise on the back of your neck.

Jake Tapper   ·  September 13, 2007 06:50 AM

Jake,

Very closely follow all of these people???

Pray tell where do we get the resources for THAT??!!! We have hardly enough law enforcement as it is to just enforce existing laws, much less enanct and carry out a surveillance program on all Arabs living in this country. I won't even get started on the constitutional issues of it.

No. Better for individual citizens to remain alert. Those who are comfortable with AND capable of carrying a firearm are certainly welcome to do so.

Joel   ·  September 13, 2007 07:13 AM

Oh, I saw those "USMC Rules for Gunfighting" as "Police Rules for Gunfighting".

Marines don't have to be polite. Cops do.

Joel   ·  September 13, 2007 07:16 AM

Yeah, if only everyone carried guns, then the world would be so safe!

Except for all the crazy people with guns.

ME   ·  September 13, 2007 08:29 AM

ME, there are now 40 states in the U.S. that are considered "right to carry" states...36 that have "shall issue" laws, 3 that are considered "discretionary/reasonable issue" and 2 that do not require a permit to carry at all. Not one of those states has had an explosion in the number of "crazy people" carrying firearms and none of those states has had a significant problem with citizens carrying legally contributing to crime.

"All the crazy people carrying guns" is one of the doomsday predictions that never materialized after more states started recognizing right to carry (back in '87, there were only 10...look at the trends in violent crime since then.)

Carrying is not only a Constitutional right, but I firmly believe a deterent and a necessity in today's social environment.

How did the idiot get caught?

I agree, homegrown terror is out there.

A short recon of what’s out there that might draw your attention, updated throughout the day...so check back often.

Do we know that this guy is in fact "home grown", i.e. born in the US and not an immigrant?

Lugo   ·  September 13, 2007 12:59 PM

Alright, you got through to me.

I've been putting off getting my CC.

I'll get it when I get home next week.

I've already gone window shopping for the right gun-- probably a 45 mag special.
http://www.shootingtimes.com/newproducts/STnew06_022106E.jpg

Something I can shoot effectively, something easy to upkeep, and something that will scare the @#$@# out of anyone I point it at. (Assuming sanity.)

Foxfier   ·  September 13, 2007 04:12 PM

Bah! Don't listen to the radio and type. I meant a .38 special.

Foxfier   ·  September 13, 2007 04:13 PM

"This is the type of home-grown individual that the people of the US need to be aware of."

You mean like Timothy James McVeigh? Did you all run out and buy guns after a white guy blew up the federal building in Oklahoma City?

The Truth   ·  September 13, 2007 05:56 PM

What do you wanna bet he got it at a gun show, where there is no check of criminal record, immigration status, or other black list. NO regulation at all.

But hey, that's the price of freedom, right? And how else will we ever get a chance to shoot people down in the street (booyah!) if they can't buy guns too?

Guns don't kill people, people with guns kill people.

Jack Flackett   ·  September 13, 2007 06:49 PM

Of course, he could have just been going off to hunt deer. I mean, that's why easily converted automatic weapons are still legal to buy, right?

Jack Flackett   ·  September 13, 2007 06:52 PM

Bull Sir,

I said so much with my last post, you remember
STANDING THE WATCH.
Ray, if that was a left handed comment, suck air and wipe your chin cause it's blowin back on ya.

YOU people, MUST get on board with the REAL
issues here! It is not about car bombs in places half a world away, what is going on in your local Universities? Shnit, in the Golden State, we have the MUSLIM BROTHERHOOD getting ready to dictate THEIR program to the REGENTS
of the CAL Sate system! So ....RAY get a EFFFING CLUE! All you people on these mil-blogs are looking WAY to far a-field!

The war is HERE. Just because there are no bullets flying, or IED'S you all ignore the danger that is right in your own back yard.

And if someone like Comrade Hillary is elected in the next cycle... you can all kiss my ......Bull Sir, I like you better with the doors open running deep, the tubes clear for launch and YOUR THUMB in a downward depression.."Bubble Heads Win the day!".
Smoke and rubble.

Richard   ·  September 13, 2007 11:02 PM

Jack-- if you really think there's no regs at a gun show, you're either ignorant or stupid.

I've never even *been* to a gun show, and I know that they're covered in the regs.

Troll much?

Foxfier   ·  September 14, 2007 06:11 AM

This is a good time for the "head on a swivel" caution. There was a news report I believe from Texas that used yellow school buses were being sought. By whom, I don't know. In Florida, two adult Arab males got on a bus full of schoolchildren without challenge. Teach your kids how to stay aware, too.

jordan   ·  September 14, 2007 09:45 AM

One word for you, ME and Jack Flackett... victim.

Or is it sheep?

Hope you get a nice 911 operator on the phone while some guy is blasting away at you... it'll be the last voice you live to hear.

One of the most disturbing pictures I saw at my police academy was a dead woman laying on the kitchen floor in her home with about a dozen stab wounds to her back, phone clutched in hand into which she had been screaming to 911 for help.

We can't be everywhere at once, brother.

Joel   ·  September 14, 2007 10:14 AM

This is good advice, and the only thing I'd add to it is that people shouldn't focus so much on Muslims. Yes, they practice a religion that a lot of us aren't familiar with, and they have a different skin color than many of us. It's perfectly natural to be scared of people who are different, but it's also important to rise above that and not pre-judge them.

I just heard a story on the radio this morning about a cell of white, presumably Christian, terrorists who were stockpiling weapons and making credible threats against police officers. At least one of them had infiltrated the US Army! Here's an article with some more information:
http://www.newsday.com/news/local/wire/newyork/ny-bc-ny--taxevaders-raid0913sep13,0,2411195.story

So you can see there are all kinds of dangerous idiots out there. Obviously we shouldn't use this as an excuse to persecute whole groups of vaguely-similar people. But, like Bull said, we should be aware that people like this exist in the US, and we should be prepared.

chaos_engineer   ·  September 14, 2007 12:38 PM

I live in Michigan. I've been to a lot of gun shows. Anyone who says they don't perform the required b.g. checks is lying.

That means you, Jack Flackett.

Murdoc   ·  September 14, 2007 08:30 PM

What do you wanna bet he got it at a gun show, where there is no check of criminal record, immigration status, or other black list.

There’s an overwhelming correlation between those who want to see the 2nd Amendment overturned, and those who think we should not check ID’s of voters in our elections, because it would somehow be a racist action against Mexicans, and it’s unfair to felons.

I’m just sayin’. . . the odds of this Jack character not fitting that pattern are astronomical, ergo, . . . well you fill in the blanks.

As for gunshows, did anyone catch the news of the Mexican police officers who were arrested at a Phoenix gunshow last weekend? It’d been nice for them if there were no regulations at gunshows I suppose.

Ray G   ·  September 15, 2007 08:48 AM

I live in Michigan. I've been to a lot of gun shows. Anyone who says they don't perform the required b.g. checks is lying.

Ditto in northern Virginia.
