And Another Thing!

By Lt Col P

Since I'm in a particularly bellicose mood today, allow me to introduce you to the newest member of the family... 6.85 pounds, 32 inches long, solid black...

The Smith & Wesson M&P15T.

Arrived last Thursday at 1400. Haven't shot it yet, but I like the feel and the ergos. I think I have a keeper. (Good review here.)

(BTW, allow me to give two thumbs up to GunBroker.com. A great site, full of bargains.)

m'kay, I'm jealous. My latest purchase was a muzzle loader but I swear the gun shop had one of those hanging on the wall....I didn't bother looking at the price tag....

I've had one for about 4 months and about 2000 rounds now. Replaced the stock with a Magpul CTR because mine had a bit of rattle, and swapped out the grip for an Ergo... otherwise it is bone stock and runs like a top.

The older models were actually made by Stag, but the newer ones are built in house by S&W. The Troy front flip up BUIS uses an AK style front sight post and not an AR, so if you want to switch out for a tritium/fiberoptic, you have to get one for an AK.

For the price, they are a hard deal to beat. Tough to buy a stock M4 copy and then trick it out like that for the $$$. I love mine:

GunBroker.com is the website run by Davidson's Firearms and they have some great people working there.
I've dealt with them for several years now and have always been impressed.

Mule,

Nice Punisher logo on the mag........

Old Tanker   ·  September 11, 2007 05:43 AM

And I was proud of my recently purchased Mosin-Nagant 91/30...

But, I bet I can crack a jaw with the stock of my weapon quicker than you can with yours.

And the bayonet for my rifle is really nasty... :)

Tanker, thanks...I had to have some way of marking my mags for the range, and didn't want to just scrawl "Mule" on them in Sharpie.

Nice piece of ordnance. I am going to withhold on mods until I get comfy with the basic model. Except for a sling, I will put one on at the earliest possible moment. Question-- have you had any magazine issues?

LtCol P   ·  September 11, 2007 04:10 PM

Does it have a gas piston or is it operated by direct gas impingement like the M-16/AR-15/M-4?

Nicholas   ·  September 11, 2007 04:17 PM

No mag issues so far, I use both Center Industry and D&H mags in it, and also two of the HK mags, without issue. I have read that people have had issues with the polymer Magpul P-Mags, in that they won't drop free, and that you have to modify P-Mags with a Dremel tool around the top ribs to get them to drop.

As far as ammo goes, I've run Winchester white box, Wolf polymer coated, Black Hills reman, Ultramax reman and Hornady TAP through it. I have not had a malfunction of any kind. Mine LOVES the 75 grain TAP load.

Also, Troy is supposedly going to change their folding front sights from AK posts to AR posts in about a month, and is going to offer a factory refit for anyone with the older sights.

BR, I was wondering when you were going to post about your latest weapon. I will have to get a pic of mine up, but it is OLD. I am thinking about getting a flat-top receiver for it.

On another note, I just bought a Galco BATTL sling for my Mossberg shotgun. It looks promising and I would suggest taking a look at their AR15/M16/M4 version.

Did you get that sling to hunt with?? Let me know how it works out. I would be concerned about getting the barrel snagged on brush trying to get the gun up on a bird or bunny. I usually hunt with dogs so I like to walk barrel up for the safety of the dogs.

Old Tanker   ·  September 12, 2007 04:18 AM

Nicholas: it's not a "piston" gun, straight Stoner DI gas action.

On the subject of slings, if anyone is in the market for a single point set-up, I have a brand new Specter Gear that I'd be willing to drop in an envelope and ship out. I used it for about 3 days before I decided that single point slings aren't for me...one too many "cup checks" when making a transition.

Right now I'm running a modified 3 point set up that I made myself, for about 8 bucks worth of 1 1/4" nylon and a couple of fastex buckles and sliders. It works slick and holds the weapon exactly where I want when I let it go. Anybody who wants to see how I did it, I can put some pics up later.

Funny how a guy who drops four figures on a weapon without blinking chokes on 50 bucks for a sling to carry it with...

Gun talk...man, is there anything better?

Mule   ·  September 12, 2007 09:51 AM

I had to build my own. ;-) But it's NICE!
