Picture of the Day: Welcome Home
By John
Elmendorf AFB is the third recipient of the Air Force's new toy....
Six F-22 Raptors taxi following touchdown at Elmendorf Air Force Base, Alaska, during a ceremony marking the aircraft's arrival Aug. 8. The F-22s will join the active duty 3rd Wing and Air Force Reserve Command's 477th Fighter Group here. The 477th FG becomes the first Air Force Reserve unit to operate and maintain the F-22. What I want to know is this... do these things have "new fighter" smell?
There goes the neighborhood!
Wow, those are beautiful birds! Wish I could fly in one.
No wonder the market tanked..the USAF has been taking out shady loans to pay for all those aircraft. :-)
Then again, an F-22 looks better while being gunned by an F-18 when silohuetted against the moutains............
F-18? Give me a break! The 18 would never know the 22 was there until it was ALL OVER!!!
What scares me is I remember standing on that very spot at Elmendorf back in the 70's arming and dearming F4E Phantoms in zero degree weather and wind blowing 20knots! Then being told to get your duffel bag, your going to Galena AFS for a couple of weeks!
HUD camera footage does not lie. I'll put any SFTI trained Hornet driver against an F-22 any day of the week.
Of course Hornets can navigtate across the IDL..........
HUD footage does not tell the story of how the Raptor ended up there, however.
Like, for instance, if the Hornet pilot requested to intercept.
There's no question whatsoever that the Raptor is superior to the Hornet. It's not even a debate.
I had the pleasure of watching several F-22s landing at Elmendorf yesterday while I was in the PAX Terminal waiting to board my ride home. It was pretty cool. My newly adopted son was thrilled as well - he loves planes.
Hey, I was on that flightline at Elmendorf arming & dearming too, Dec81-83. Looking for Jim "Big Bird" Roberts. Know him?

And, sitting in those conference rooms in Dayton, Seattle, St. Louis, Houston, Ft. Worth, Reston, San Diego, LA, we thought it might never fly!
Beautiful!
