   It looks like he’s holding the mortar tube up by hand. I don’t see any stand or baseplate…. Could he have been using a homemade mortar tube made out of a length of pipe or something?

   Any way it goes, he clearly did not enjoy Allah’s favor that day. Good riddance.

   Many 60mm mortar systems have the capability to be fired in “handheld” mode. They use a small, assault baseplate and are typically held using some kind of sleeve or insulated glove. The M224 LWCM used by the Army and Marine Corps is typically fired using a trigger in handheld mode, but it can also be fired in drop fire mode, and I would imagine that not all 60mm mortar systems have a trigger fire mode. I’ll see what I can find on Soviet-bloc 60mm mortar systems. I know we had a cell in our AO last year that used a 60mm in handheld mode on us several times last year. It’s practically useless unless you can see the target (they couldn’t), but it is much faster than firing from a bipod and has the added advantage for the BGs of having a very low trajectory.

   The mortar did not explode in the tube. You can see the explosion take place over what looks like a mattress to the left. Could it be counter-battery fire or a M-203 round?

   I’m also surprised the camera survived the impact. It looks to be only about 15-feet away.
