New AOC Opens

By John

At Tyndall AFB. The new AOC (pronounced "a-ock") apparently fits in to some sort of post 9/11 NORAD/Hurricane Katrina function:

First Air Force celebrated the opening of the 601st Air and Space Operations Center here June 1 with a ceremony and tour of the 37,000-square-foot, $30 million combat center.

First Air Force, which also serves under the North American Aerospace Defense Command as the continental U.S. NORAD Region, provides air security and air sovereignty defense for the continental United States. Airmen at the new AOC plan, direct and assess air and space operations for NORAD and the United States Northern Command.

Conceived in the aftermath of Sept. 11, 2001, the state-of-the-art AOC further enables 1st Air Force Airmen to protect America's airspace from attack as well as coordinate life-saving relief during natural and man-made disasters.

As you can see, they stuck with the Cheyenne mountain war-room design:

Okay, I understand shifting the NORAD mission from the traditional ballistic missile warning to a more air defense centered role, but.... if we were told that Cheyenne Mountain is closing as a cost-saving measure, why are we building multiple new AOCs to fill Cheyenne Mountain's shoes?

Redundancy? We already had that, between CM, the NMCC, and our National Airborne Command Post. Just seems like we're fixing something that wasn't necessarily broken here.....Cheyenne Mountain was all but invincible....surely we still have use for such a facility in the post-Cold War world?

Plus, with Cheyenne Mountain gone, how are we going to trick the Broncos' Cheerleaders into visiting us?

Seriously.

Now that's why I read blogs!

The cheerleader part not the AOC part.

But Colorado Springs isn't as good golf country as Florida....and golf is FAR more important than that nasty warfighting business.

Sort of reminds me of when they created the Johnson space center.

Some said LBJ got it put in Texas with political pull.

But this was disproven when a congressional investigation determined the moon was closer to Houston than it was to Cape Canaveral.

Don't you realize that Stargate Command has taken over all the usable space inside the mountain? With all the teams waiting for off world activity and being de-briefed after coming back plus all the research it is a wonder they didn't take over the facility a long time ago.

Cheyenne Mountain isn't closed yet and I doubt it will close. The cost associated with the closing is a lot more than the Admiral let on. He just didn't like to drive to the mountain that is the real reason for the closure. A typical waste of resources and time just because the person in charge wanted to save himself being driven to the Mountain instead of having everything a Peterson AFB .

That is the last thing the Air Force needs is another AOC. It already has about 2 too many. I spend half my year in AOC's hearing the Air Force crow about its great weapon system. Never was never will be. Seems to me there should be 4-Hickam, Al Udeid, Cheyenne, and Ramstein. Nellis sure as hell does not need one nor does Davis Monthan.

It is called political pork. Sen. Nelson Dem. FL and Rep. Allan Boyd Dem 2nd cong. district FL. Both vote to kill troop funding in Southwest Asia, but dont mind spending it here. Yes I live about 8 miles from Tyndall.
Those two clowns say one thing here in Florida and vote completly diffrent in D.C.!

I work in this new AOC, (have been here since 95)CMOC is closing, and NORAD-NORTHCOM is NOT and AOC. Granted could have spent money on equipment, we needed the new facility. We conduct Air Defense for US, especially avaiation based threats (remember 7/7 plot, now JFK). The whole hurricane relief is political (New Orleans/Katrina was a joke!) The new design works well, much better then NORAD (been there a bunch!)

welcome to The World leader in AoC Gold

We pride ourselves on service and standards that are hard to find in today's RMT industry. We work hard to be a step ahead of our competitors in customer service, speed, value and price. This is our main focus so it's not something we can be easily defeated in. We feel we have achieved this and we're confident enough to say that we guarantee your satisfaction 100%. You will not find any of our competitors making a claim like that, because even they know they're lacking where we stand out.
