And Semper Fi To You Too, Eh

By Lt Col P

If you read the comments on our posts, you'll know that we have some loyal readers north of the border. First among them, the prima inter pares, is Deborah Aylward, who always has a kind word and usually signs off with "Veritas et Fidelis Semper."

Now that made me think, because it's close to the Marine Corps' "Semper Fi." But where else have I seen "Semper Fidelis" as a military unit motto? Then I remembered it, from a plaque in Breckenridge Hall, Quantico.

The West Nova Scotia Regiment shares our motto. The West NSR is an old formation indeed, tracing its lineage back to the early years of the eighteenth century. Their battle honours (couldn't resist) tell a tale that needs no embellishment. (Those of you who have heeded my advice and read McBride will know just how tough were the Canadian battalions that went overseas in The Great War.)

Give 'em a virtual visit, and remember that their fellow soldiers are with us today again, far away overseas.

Dear Sir: While it would be my honour to lay claim to my sign-off as being the motto of noble Military Regiment here in Canada, I must confess that it is nothing more than my family's motto.

The kinship which I have always felt with the United States Marine Corps goes back many years to when, as a young child, I first learned of the Corps from one of my uncles who had served, fought, bled, and survived amongst his "Corps of buddies". Then for a school project in secondary school, I learned that my family motto is very close to that of the Marine Corps...Semper Fidelis (ever/always faithful)...Veritas et Fidelis Semper (true and faithful ever/always).

You have done me an undeserved honour by mentioning my name on the site of those who are more worthy than I; who is nothing more than a loyal friend, and supporter, of our Military, the United States Marine Corps, and America.

Thank you, Colonel and OPFOR, for allowing me to visit on occasion.

Veitas et Fidelis Semper

Excuse, please, a slip of the fingers, and the grey matter.
