And Semper Fi To You Too, Eh

If you read the comments on our posts, you’ll know that we have some loyal readers north of the border. First among them, the prima inter pares, is Deborah Aylward, who always has a kind word and usually signs off with “Veritas et Fidelis Semper.”

Now that made me think, because it’s close to the Marine Corps’ “Semper Fi.” But where else have I seen “Semper Fidelis” as a military unit motto? Then I remembered it, from a plaque in Breckenridge Hall, Quantico.

The West Nova Scotia Regiment shares our motto. The West NSR is an old formation indeed, tracing its lineage back to the early years of the eighteenth century. Their battle honours (couldn’t resist) tell a tale that needs no embellishment. (Those of you who have heeded my advice and read McBride will know just how tough were the Canadian battalions that went overseas in The Great War.)

Give ‘em a virtual visit, and remember that their fellow soldiers are with us today again, far away overseas.
