Russian Raptor?

By John

Russian engine manufacturer NPO Saturn's website has provided what appears to be a first glimpse of Russia's fifth-generation fighter under development as part of the PAK FA project.

NPO Saturn has been selected to supply engines for the Sukhoi T-50, which won the Russian ministry of defence's tender over a rival submission from RSK MiG. The simplified image of the T-50 shows it to be a twin-engine design with a classic aerodynamic layout resembling the Lockheed Martin F-22A Raptor. However, its smaller horizontal and vertical control surfaces reflect the fact that the aircraft is expected to use vectored thrust for pitch, yaw and roll control.

And presumably an enclosed weapons bay? Uber-powerful radar? Sounds like they copied everything but the 200 million dollar price tag. In which case, hey...maybe we should buy some.

Still, I hope their fighter plagarizing goes as well as when the Ruskies ripped off our space shuttle design.

That, and that whole "stealth" thing.

Because just looking at the picture, that ain't a stealth design.

mmmm you sure? No hard corners that I can see, twin canted stabilizers....

though I digress, much of the magic lies in the material.

I was talking to David Axe at the conference this past weekend, he seems to think that stealth is going the way of the dinosaur. Just need new radars to beat it.

That thing will print on our radar very well.

Creativity of design is just not a strongpoint of leftist ideology.

The Russians have historically stolen just about every design they've ever had.

From us.

Still can be deadly, though.

We need to stay on top of the situation at all times, not fall prey to the deadly notion that any other country or nation is a trusted friend of any kind.

I'm still not convinced that the Soviet Union really "fell" -- or did they, like a cheap used car lot, simply change the name and business as usual?

Perhaps the situation is purely one of not knowing any other ideology than what they had for decades.

Speak softly and carry a big stick.

I'm with geezer... The Russians have ripped of most if not all of their aircraft from us. Just look at the Bear (a B-52 in Russian clothing). Its kind of hard to be creative with the Gulag hanging over your head or thugs from whatever they are calling the KGB these days looking over their shoulder...

Stealth isn't just about angles on the aircraft, it has to have specialized paint compound that absorbs or deflects the waves. And the Ruskies won't ba able to touch us as far as avionics goes. While we have been perfecting that stuff they were dealing with actually having to pay their workers.

That looks a lot like a MiG-29 to me. It seems to have bigger wings, a larger dorsal hump and angled vertical fins, but otherwise quite similar in shape.

I heard they had problems fueling the aircraft.
You see, the fuel it uses is Stolichnaya vodka, and by the time the fueling truck got to the runway to fuel the aircraft, all the fuel magically disappeared! Hee Hee...

No doubt the USAF will use this thing to justify the purchase of another 500 F-22's.
