VMI Honors Tech
By John
Was most pleased to discover this photo:
A contingent of cadets from Virginia Military Institute marched with the Virginia Tech Corps of Cadets in honor of Cadet Matthew La Porte April 25. Cadet La Porte, a sophomore in Air Force ROTC Detachment 875 and the Virginia Tech Corps of Cadets, was one of the 32 students and faculty killed during the shooting incident at the school April 16. Although, I'm a little disappointed that all VMI decided to send was a couple of Thirds (sophmores). We've had a long-standing, friendly rivalry with Virginia Tech's Corps of Cadets for decades, figured that -at least- deserved the participation of our color guard, firing detail, or the regimental staff.
Or hell, I see no reason why the Institute couldn't truck our artillery pieces down to Blacksburg for a gunpowder salute.
Nit-picking of course, I'm just glad VMI paid the proper respect to our Hokie brothers-in-arms.

nicely done in showing support.
...and it almost appears that half of them might almost be somewhat in step together.
well the cadet...last row, first rank..needs to pick up the pace a bit. But other than that they seem to be in good military order.
I was initially surprised to see the entire VTCC regiment attended the funeral, until I learned it was held in Blacksburg. Which puzzled me further that Cadet La Porte would be buried there rather than somewhere else. Then I realized it was none of my business where his family decided he should be interred.
Thanks for posting the VMI picture; the VMI-VPI rivalry is an old and an honorable one, as this honor detail testifies.
i really love VMI and when i graduate from high school in 2011 i am really looking forward to joining VMI and if i get in when i graduate i wanna join the Military or the Marines
I was looking for things related to April 16, I do go to tech but I also have friends at VMI, seeing this show of support means so much to me and the rest of the Hokie Community here at Tech. To answer the comment above. Matt loved everything military, a love that started during his teen years going to a military academy, his family knew that he would have wanted to be close to the school and Corp he loved so much.

Thanks for sharing this photo. It comforts. I'm always amazed and pleased at the way the military sticks together and stands with one another in times of trouble. Why, oh why can't we transfer that mindset to our entire citizenry? Where are we going wrong in educating our young people? What will it take in America to regain a unifed focus and effort? Don't say it can't be done. I'm an American and I know we can achieve anything we set our minds to.
