Another Picture of the Day

By John

Just because the news is justly focused....elsewhere.

U.S. NAVY AIRCRAFT from Carrier Air Wing 5 perform a formation flight in front of Mount Fuji, Japan, April 12, 2007. Nine squadrons are assigned to the air wing and embarked aboard USS Kitty Hawk. The squadrons operate from Naval Air Facility Atsugi, Japan. Kitty Hawk operates out of Fleet Activities Yokosuka, Japan. Photo Courtesy of the US Navy

I, for one, support the Navy's conquest of Mount Fuji, and welcome new rocky acquisitions under the banner of the American empire, such as Kilimanjaro, Everest, and the Moon.

It's interesting to note that there are really only 3 airframes in this photo. The rest is just tweaking.

Conquest....heh.

Cordially,

Three airframes is correct... one is the Hornet... everything else is to carry the fuel for the Hornet to make it to its target.

I, too, mourn the loss of the Tomcat-Intruder air wing. The Hornet, even the Super Hornet, is simply no substitute.

Just think, in a couple of years, when the Prowler is replaced by the Growler, there will be only TWO airframes in a CVW. All in an effort to streamline maintenance. Good? Certainly from the maintainers' aspect. From a warfighting aspect? I don't know.

Dont worry, on the other side of the mount Fuji is a flight of B52's B1, B2, F-15,16,117,22, A-10, AC-130,F-15E ,KC10, KC135 C-5 C-17 C-130, and other Air Force aircraft to carry out an air war! lol

Out of that plethora of aircraft, I'd take the B-52, A-10, AC-130, and a KC-10 for refuelling.

The B-2 is ridiculously expensive. The B-1... well, that thing was a piece of junk when it first took flight. It was meant to replace the venerable B-52, but it will be retired long before the last B-52 flies.

The F-15 and F-16 are nice, but I don't think al-Qaeda has an Air Force, so not much mission there. When it comes to CAS, give me an A-10 over these planes any day.

The F-117 can't wander out of an ECM protective bubble (provided by a Navy Prowler, of course) without getting shot down by SAM's.
