No, seriously. From The Socialist Worker Online:
[300 is] a rank cesspool of racism, sexism, homophobia and “freedom-loving” pro-war propaganda….The film is riddled with historical inaccuracies, but it’s the ones that send clear right-wing messages that are the most alarming. The filmmakers go to great lengths to portray the Persians as evil, decadent, cruel and effeminate, unlike the manly men of Sparta……
The most dangerous aspect of 300 is its blatant call for the West to attack Iran. Iran, after all, used to be called Persia, and the film pulls no punches in exhorting the “free and rational” West to defend itself against the Persian hordes. Queen Gorgo even utters the tired cliché “Freedom is not free!”…..
It shouldn’t be surprising then that Miller’s next project is a comic book called Holy Terror, Batman! where the Caped Crusader goes up against Al-Qaeda in New York City.
It shouldn’t be a surprise. Because everyone knows that fighting terrorism has no tangible benefit outside of satisfying that uniquely conservative lust for blood. It’s science.
And ideology aside, this guy is pretty sharp. “Iran, after all, used to be called Persia.” So I tend to believe him when he takes a fictionalized account of a purely defensive battle fought over 2 millenniums back and interprets it as a super secret rallying call to launch a massive offensive against the Islamic State of Iran. To, you know, ensure that Xerxes stops defying the UN or something.
Hotel Tango: The Tank

I say take it one step further. In Sparta, only the best men served in the military. And only those in the military were citizens.
I just don’t get why they’re so upset. Xerxes’ costuming was fabulous! The wardrobe guy’s going to get an Oscar.
The similar Iranian critiques also miss the boat. The battle was centuries before the birth of Christ, many centuries before the birth of Islam. Islam teaches that the pagan, symbolic, multi-god past was blasphemous, and that it came along to rescue the world from those evils. The movie only shows the depths of the carnage of the ancient world.
Now the lefties are sticklers for historic accuracy. They didn’t seem bothered by Farenheit 9/11′s artistic license.
The point (spear) of this beautiful film is the HONOR, DIGNITY, SACRAFICE, model that is looming in the back streets, farms, ranges that still are ABUNDANT in this country and are poised to STEP UP when the time comes. Just u wait……..

These commies strikeout at a movie because the think they own the “emotional truth” which is the movies.
When conservatives rose, they put “West Wing” on TV. I knew a guy who actually though Sheen was the president.
Movies are truth to them, so they go bonkers when one comes out that doesn’t fit their template.
They go even nuttier when it does land office business.
well, these commies are not real sticklers for historic truth because the cited movie “Alexander Nevsky” does NOT depict a battle between Russians and Holy Roman Empire but a battle between Russians and one order of Teutonic Knights (not catholics or romans) in 13th century…
and they entirely missed the point of the movie and the actual historic event: courage and honor to fight for your country and principles.
good to see that the author of the article didn’t try and do any research about the goal of the director or Frank Miller. in interviews they state that it is NOT historically accurate, and that they never intended for it to be. it was meant to be based on and follow the graphic novel, which it did. that said, the movie was awesome. it was kinda funny though, because after seeing it over easter break, i got deja vu from resurection week. the commandant had given us a speech the very first morning, basically along the lines of how vmi is unique, we embrace a hard life style, and i quote “while other schools like W&L may be athens, this (VMI), this is Sparta!”
