PT: The Soundtrack

By John

My gym playlist is getting kind of stale. So what are your favorite workout songs?

Here are my top five, according to my iPod nano, which never telleth a lie:

1. Metallica - Whiskey in a Jar
2. Outkast - Bombs over Baghdad
3. Dropkick Murphys - I'm Shipping Up to Boston
4. The Cure - Pictures of You
5. Guns n' Roses - Sweet Child 'O Mine

A word on The Dropkick Murphys. Perhaps it's the Irish in me, and I'm somehow genetically predisposed to digging their stuff, but I think these guys are great. Don't like punk. Don't like bagpipes. Don't even really like Boston all that much. But I dare you to crank up Fields of Athenry and tell me that you can't see yourself singing along, sloshing your oversized beer mug side to side in drunken rhythm, with your arms around a complete stranger in a dirty pub whose name starts with an O apostrophe.

Heh, now that I think about it, mebbe it IS the Irish in me.

I'm just kidding about Boston. I swear. Yeesh. Blogging on songs about the Irish potato famine. Feel free to stop reading this blog. Seriously.

On those rare ocassions when I do work out, old Metallica is the best ('course I've been listening to them for 23 years, or something like that)...also anything from Slayer. That's just me.

I got the soundtrack from The Departed just for the Dropkick Murphys. Need some more of that...

bullnav   ·  February 22, 2007 07:20 PM

oh yeah! The menu song on the dvd for The Departed is "I'm Shipping Up to Boston," the energy is contagious.

Sad, I think that crafting clever drinking songs is becoming a lost art. Just another reason I love the DMs.

Heh, Slayer is a bit much for me....although their music is still used with favorable results on hapless rat-ties, so I hear.

John   ·  February 22, 2007 07:27 PM

oh and fun fact, while we're on the topic. Whiskey in a Jar isn't a Metallica original, was first written as an Irish folk song back in the day.

If you like the Dropkick Murphy's, you might also like Flogging Molly. It's hard to argue with a song called Drunken Lullabyes.

Ryan   ·  February 22, 2007 07:43 PM

Ryan...GREAT tip, am perusing iTunes as we speak. Didn't they have a song called "Fight, Drink, Screw" or something?

John   ·  February 22, 2007 07:45 PM

John, not sure, I only have 2 of their albums. Would definitely recommend their album Drunken Lullabies.

Ryan   ·  February 22, 2007 08:25 PM

I don't know about Flogging Molly, but the original singer from Dropkick Murphy's has a fake Irish accent. It's weird.

John, you might check out The Pouges if you like the punkrock-irish stuff.

Mike   ·  February 22, 2007 10:09 PM

cold sweat by thin lizzy.

anything by teh mighty mighty bosstones

Carson Wilcox   ·  February 22, 2007 10:23 PM

I'll second Mighty Mighty Bosstones (my all-time favorite band). You might also check out Real McKenzies. Scottish rather than Irish, but I'm willing to overlook it.

Also, I saw Dropkick Murphys a few years back at Warped Tour. They're fantastic live.

PirateParrot   ·  February 23, 2007 06:20 AM

1. RUSH - Between the Wheels
2. Metallica - One (awesome video)
3. - Careful With That Axe, Eugene
4. Kansas - Sparks of the Tempest
5. CCR - Fortunate Son

Freeman   ·  February 23, 2007 09:29 AM

Don't know what happened there, probably I screwed up the italics tag (wish this site had a 'preview' button). I'll try again. 3 should have been:
3. Pink Floyd - Careful With That Axe, Eugene

As a Sox fan, I'm predisposed to enjoying the Dropkick Murphys, they're friggin great. As for song recommendations, may I suggest "Metalingus" by Alter Bridge? The Marine introduced me to it and I cannot deny its power!

Pia   ·  February 23, 2007 10:14 AM

Ramstein-Live from Berlin album is a great workout. Also kind of partial to Rob Zombie in the gym also.

David   ·  February 23, 2007 12:15 PM

"Whiskey in The Jar" is an old, traditional Irish tune.

The modern, rocking version, and it's signature riff turned to 11 by Metallica, is credit to Thin Lizzy. It was the song that really broke them into the big-time. 'Fields of Athenry' iss perhaps my all-time favorite Irish song, and the DM's more than do it justice.

AS for my playlist, anything by GnR, epsecially 'Sweet Child' or 'Paradise City'.

**Don't even really like Boston all that much.**

HELLO!!! Do you want to add a qualifier? Like, "but Maggie's Great"?

I am going off to pout now. You are just jealous because you are not a Bostonian.

Maggie   ·  February 23, 2007 10:47 PM

You know, anything by AC/DC gets the job done, too. Finally, a band not too many folks may have heard of, Saxon was a South Yorkshire, UK, based late 70's metal band in the tradition of Judas Priest. Their album Power and the Glory has some kick a$$ tunes that help keep things moving...

DJ Elliott   ·  February 24, 2007 02:34 PM

heh, so Maggie did you miss the "Read More" caveat? Cause that was written with you in mind.

That many Irishmen in one place, can't be too bad of a place.

John   ·  February 24, 2007 05:36 PM

Ok, I am slightly mollified.......I did miss the "read more" the first time around.

You are lucky, I thought I was going to have to sic my friend Charlie on you.

Maggie   ·  February 24, 2007 08:54 PM

Check out anything by Amon Amarth. They're awesome Viking rock and definately workout worthy.

Matt Keller   ·  February 24, 2007 09:37 PM
