Ever seen one of these?

By John

May John Donovan forgive me for harping off of his "whatzis?" series. Mike Yon emailed a couple of us with this picture....

....asking "ever seen one of these?"

Nope!

So, does anyone know what the hell I'm looking at here?

no but i want one. can you get a close-up of the round? Looks like someone from Mattel trying to make an RPG. I'd like to see the make of the hunting scope mounted on it. Probably a giveaway.

I've seen some of the homemade silencers they've been putting on sniper rifles. Standard PVC tubing stuffed w window screen or steel wool sleeved over rifle tubes that have been drilled. From this distance, this looks like a fairly crude device w a decent paint job.

Looks like a fancy potato cannon.

RPG launcher. Crude one, but somewhat effective.

Well, it appears to be home-made, or perhaps a homespun (Iranian?) rocket launcher of some sort. Is it made to fire RPG rounds? Are the handles/stock made of wood or plastic? It has the general appearance of something cobbled together or built in a small batch in a small factory.

This could mean a couple of things - the local baddies are running short on RPG launchers and getting creative, or neighbor countries are being "helpful".

Well, Yon's site and that picture are now linked on Drudge, which has killed Mike's poor site.

My guess is a recoilless rifle in the 50-60mm range. I'd have to see the back end to know for sure.

RPG seems like an obvious choice, but I would be very surprised anyone in Iraq is running short of those. A scope is more consistent with a recoilless as well.

Could it be some type of home made training mock-up? The detail of the picture doesn't lend itself to analysis. The lighting and angle it is at suggest it is likely inert.

Looks a lot like a Shoulder-Launched Multipurpose Assault Weapon (SMAW)
Only the grips are "wrong". Less the encased rocket of course

The SMAW uses a combo iron/scope for aiming with a 9mm spotting round, I don't see a barrel for the spotting round, but that could be hidden under this unit.

Could be a knock-off to use captured ammo?

If there is a crank lever atop toward the rear it a Wham-O product.

Looks like a LAW fused with a SMAW barrel.......

If it's an RPG or recoilless launcher, why the rifle stock behind the rear handgrip? That would put the firer's shoulder directly below the exhaust end. If that's the case, the backblast should barbeque some flesh by my way of thinking.

I see I wasn't the only one to be curious about that rifle scope. Maybe "potato cannon" isn't so far off.

If it is some sort of potato gun, beware the muj loading it up with sweet potatoes and going on a yam-page. Ha ha, ha ha. Couldn't resist.
