Arkin's Response

Ugh —

Well, one thing’s abundantly clear about who will actually defend our rights to say what we believe: It isn’t the hundreds who have written me saying they are soldiers or veterans or war supporters or real Americans — who also advise me to move to another country, to get f@##d, or to die a painful, violent death.

Don’t even try to play that game Arkin. Don’t use the handful of hateful emails you received as a means of distracting people from the fact that you wrote this:

But it is the United States, and the recent NBC report is just an ugly reminder of the price we pay for a mercenary – oops sorry, volunteer – force that thinks it is doing the dirty work….I’ll accept that the soldiers, in order to soldier on, have to believe that they are manning the parapet, and that’s where their frustrations come in. I’ll accept as well that they are young and naïve and are frustrated with their own lack of progress and the never changing situation in Iraq. Cut off from society and constantly told that everyone supports them, no wonder the debate back home confuses them.

Usually when someone hits rock bottom, they don’t start digging. Usually.

These men and women are not fighting for money with little regard for the nation. The situation might be much worse than that: Evidently, far too many in uniform believe that they are the one true nation. They hide behind the constitution and the flag and then spew an anti-Democrat, anti-liberal, anti-journalism, anti-dissent, and anti-citizen message that reflects a certain contempt for the American people.

No, we just don’t like being called cheap, uneducated soldiers-for-hire. Or having to entertain smug lectures on how we’re junior McFascists. I don’t recall anyone to tell this guy to shut up, and why would they? He’s destroyed his credibility and turned himself into a punchline. On the contrary, the more this guy writes, the more pro-victory votes he draws out of the woodwork. Keep it up Arkin!

Other than the little bit of outrage directed Arkins way,..

What Arkin doesn’t hear are all the people who don’t have access to comminicate with him who laughing at him for the clown he is making of himself.

Not laughing with glee, but mocking his absolute foolishness.

  2. Richard Lowry says:

We all need to just ignore this guy Arkin. Every time we link to his blob or comment on his garbage we increase his notoriety.

    Just ignore Arkin.

  3. Curtis says:

“advise me to move to another country, to get f@##d, or to die a painful, violent death.”

This guy has no sense of context. Military folks are some of the most helpful people in the world. In this case we’re advising him to A: move to a place where his views are considered normal. I hear Venezuala is really nice this time of year. B: Find a suitable companion so that he can relax enough not to throw a panic attack every time he gets called unpatriotic. Or C: Come to Iraq and feel free to ask our enemies just how they feel about whats going down first hand. We’ll not just let you wander around unsupervised and alone, we’ll damn near insist on it.

I don’t know if this is the kind of thing we need to just ignore. This guy is dangerous. He’s completely wrong, and foolish in being so, but dangerous nonetheless.

Why? Because, to use an Emeril phrase, he has “kicked it up a notch” in the Liberal anti-war rhetoric, and WaPo has given its tacit approval.

See, this kind of article is what we saw a lot of during Vietnam; maybe not articles per se but the sentiments. So I see this as a dangerous teetering on the edge of protesting the troops themselves, much like the spitters and criers of “Baby killer!” did during Vietnam.

I honestly never expected this kind of article to surface from a major newspaper site; it’s too over-the-top…even for a bloggish one. I thought even Liberals realized this kind of talk was off limits and unjustified.

    Guess I was wrong.

anyone else read – not seen, but READ – Starship Troopers? It’s jackholes like Arkin that caused the fictitious / futuristic society of the book.

keep on diggin your hole Arkin, keep on diggin’.
